Beursupdate: AEX op Wall Street

(ABM FN-Dow Jones) Op Wall Street zijn vrijdag twee van de acht AEX-genoteerde fondsen ten opzichte van het slot in Amsterdam hoger gesloten. RELX was met een winst van 0,5 procent de sterkste stijger. Aegon was met een verlies van 0,7 procent de sterkste daler.

In the late hours between Tuesday and Wednesday, ArcelorMittal Hamburg faced a significant operational challenge as 140 metric tons of molten steel spilled. The incident, though severe in material loss, fortunately resulted in no injuries. Local media initially reported the leak at 80 metric tons, but ArcelorMittal later confirmed the higher volume in a statement provided to Kallanish.

The spill occurred within a container, but the company has not disclosed further details about the cause of the leak or the extent of the disruption to their production processes. "The damage is under repair, so that we can resume production as soon as possible," stated ArcelorMittal, highlighting their focus on swiftly addressing the issue to minimize downtime.

De staalbouwsector in Nederland staat al langer onder druk. Niet alleen vanwege de slechte CO2-prestaties van het bouwmateriaal, maar ook vanwege een dalende interesse in het vakgebied onder nieuwe generaties ingenieurs. "De sector vergrijst", waarschuwt Frank Maatje, directeur van de vereniging Bouwen met Staal, in Doorzagen (podcast).
Kijk je naar de cijfers, marges en omzetten, dan is de Nederlandse staalsector eigenlijk al jaren stabiel. Toch piept en kraakt de branche van stalen balken en liggers. Niet in de laatste plaats omdat steeds meer opdrachtgevers en bouwers hun vizieren richten op biobased materialen, zoals hout en hennep.
Frank Maatje, directeur van de vereniging Bouwen met Staal, spreekt zijn zorgen daarover uit in de nieuwste aflevering van de podcast Doorzagen. Hij staat ook uitgebreid stil bij de mislukte aanbesteding van de Van Brienenoordbrug die staalbouwers in verlegenheid bracht en brengt.
Het is niet louter kommer en kwel. Zo legt de windturbinemarkt de staalbranche geen windeieren. Bovendien zijn de kansen voor duurzamer staal volgens de civieltechnisch ingenieur kansrijk.
