Uber banned in India's technology hub of Hyderabad.
New Delhi (dpa) - Internet-based taxi service Uber was banned Wednesday in India's southern metropolis of Hyderabad, days after a female passenger was allegedly raped by a driver in the national capital New Delhi.
Federal Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday advised states to stop the operations of the company and ensure that only registered services were allowed.
Hyderabad senior transport official T Raghunath said all web-based taxi services had been banned since they were not licensed.
People were also not advised to use the service, he said.
Hyderabad is considered India's information technology hub, with a population of 3.9 million.
US-based Uber has already been banned in New Delhi after the city police accused the company of hiring the suspect without conducting proper background checks and ignoring his criminal record
