Apple needs TomTom (powering Apple Maps).

I've long speculated that Apple is trying to merge its mobile operating system, iOS, with its desktop operating system, OS X Maverick, and the "iPad Pro" seems as if it's the device to finally introduce that. Apple has brought some features from iOS to OS X, including Maps, Calendar, Notes and others, so it seems like this is starting to happen.

With Samsung introducing new tablets geared towards the business professional (along with several new televisions and smart appliances), it's clear Samsung is feeling the heat from Apple. I suspect though, that Apple will have the last laugh on this, as it almost always does.

Het is te stil bij TomTom; alleen verplichte aankondigen produkt/dienst lanceringen.

Het is duidelijk dat de komende maand een beursexit of takeover van TomTom door Apple gaat plaats vinden.

Inspirator verplicht Management Board van TomTom tot creeren van stakeholdersvalue.

De koerswaarde van TomTom is 30 euro en geen 10 euro.

Apple acquisition: TomTom instead of Waze

Waze acquisition

In June, Google made another intriguing mobile app acquisition when it bought Waze, a crowd-based traffic and navigation app for mobile devices. The transaction was rumoured in various reports on 10 June, but Google unveiled the finished deal on 11 June.

Waze collects and communicates user-generated reports on traffic and navigation information to help drivers ease their commuting stresses. Google paid about $1.3 billion to acquire the Israel-based Waze to add to Google’s growing portfolio of popular and revenue-enhancing mapping tools.

Google’s discussions with Waze began after previous talks between Waze and Facebook failed to reach a similar agreement. Those discussions came after yet another rumoured deal arose in late 2012 when Apple purportedly was about to purchase Waze.

At the time, the rumours called for Apple to acquire Waze to bolster its own mapping services, which had suffered after Apple tried to build a Google Maps replacement for its iOS 6 operating system in September 2012.

14 January 2013 – TomTom has enjoyed another year of strong growth for its fleet management business after recording a 38 per cent increase in its install base.

A total of 330,000 vehicles are now managed by TomTom Business Solutions’ technology– up from 239,000 in January 2013. In excess of 27,000 clients use TomTom’s fleet management service to manage vehicles driven in more than 60 countries worldwide.

“This year-on-year growth reflects our ongoing success in bringing to market products that offer significant value to companies operating vehicle fleets,” said Thomas Schmidt, Managing Director, TomTom Business Solutions.

It’s truly waterproof, unlike some fitness watches, and better yet is slimmer in profile than most any others that we’ve seen. We mentioned Nike above, but TomTom actually built their well-liked watch, and it shows- the Runner presents everything on a large visual display and it proved more scratch-resistant and durable than some others too.

Ze krijgen er dit jaar wel een concurrent bij; Samsung.

Wat wel typerend is, is dat TomTom wel in 1 keer de juiste strategische weg is ingeslagen, namelijk de smartwatch gericht op fitness. Samsung moet na een flop ook ombuigen naar deze fitness-markt, waar TomTom dus al een tijdje actief is.

Helder, als je alleen kijkt naar de PND-verkopen, en erin gelooft dat Google gaat domineren in de automarkt is er weinig meer weggelegd voor TomTom.

Het nieuws van gisteren bevestigd dat Business Solutions ook doorstoomt.

En de sporthorloge lijkt ook strategisch een goede keus te zijn, aangezien Samsung zich ook in deze markt gaat begeven, omdat de eerdere gear was geflopt. Zou wel eens willen weten welk deel van de hardware omzet uit fitness komt, dan kun je het pas echt staven.

Dit maakt het vaag dat de shorters deze potentie niet zien, ze zetten vol in op een mislukte transitie van TomTom.

Er zijn grote bedreigingen, maar zeker ook enorme kansen. Voorlopig nog wat onzekerheid, en verwacht niet dat de outlook straks heel opportunistisch gaat worden. Winswaarschuwingen zit het management van TomTom niet meer op te wachten lijkt me.

Als TomTom in 2014 de transitie bevestigd in de kwartaalcijfers, dan zien we vanzelf wat de shorters gaan doen. Alleen zal dit niet zoals inspiratort meld te zien zijn in 25 dagen, dat gaat echt wat langer duren, mits de transitie slaagt natuurlijk!
