Front-month Dutch gas futures fell to €170 per megawatt hour, the lowest in over two months, as abundant supplies of LNG, particularly from the US, helped countries fill storage sites ahead of the winter session. Gas storage sites in Germany were 91% full as of September 24th, higher than the EU average of 87.4% full storage according to data from the Aggregated Gas Storage Inventory. Storage facilities in Poland, France and Denmark were more than 95% full and those in the Netherlands, Italy and Belgium were at almost 90% full. Meanwhile, the European Commission plan that includes raising €140 billion from energy companies’ profits, a mandatory cut on energy use, and increasing liquidity now needs to be approved by the EU member states. Still, European natural gas prices are about six times higher than average for the time of year as persistent concerns about tightening supplies, mainly those from top exporter Russia, continued to hang over the market.
