India com reported that Elon Musk founded electric car maker, Tesla Inc is in talks with the Government of India to soon enter the Indian market. The Palo Alto based electric car manufacturer is planning to enter India through the single-brand retail route. However, this route comes with several riders, which include mandatory sourcing of up to 30% of parts of the value of the car to be sold in the country.
TOI reports that Tesla has approached the government of India, showing interest to enter the Indian market. The report comes after Elon Musk had tweeted about relaxing the high import duties and local sourcing of components requirements. However, the Government of India clarified about the conditions to import, manufacture and sell cars in India. Elon Musk tweeted, “In discussions with the government of India requesting temporary relief on import penalties/restrictions until a local factory is built.”
That said, Tesla is yet to officially announce its entry in the Indian market or the time frame. Recently, Tesla opened bookings for the Tesla Model 3 across the globe and India is one of the markets for the car. In fact, few Indian buyers have already booked the Model 3, which will be delivered sometime next year. However, Tesla is yet to reveal details about its after-sales service or the charging infrastructure for the cars. We hope Tesla soon marks its foray into the Indian market as Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself showcased interest in the Tesla after visiting the company’s factory in 2015. Moreover, Mr Nitin Gadkari recently revealed the Government of India’s plan to only have electric vehicles by 2030.
