Port Hedland iron ore exports up 3% in June
Iron ore exports from Western Australia’s Port of Port Hedland rose 3.1% year-on-year in June amid weaker prices.
The port shipped 43.09 million tonnes of iron ore last month, up from 41.81 million tonnes a year earlier. Last month’s shipments are 2.3% lower than May’s record high 44.08 million tonnes, however, according to data released by the Pilbara Ports Authority on Friday July 7.
Metal Bulletin’s 62% Fe Iron Ore Index averaged $57.10 per tonne cfr China in June, up 10.4% from $51.71 per tonne cfr a year earlier, but down 7.3% from May’s $61.59 per tonne cfr.
China’s intake of the steelmaking raw material from the port increased 6% year-on-year to 36.58 million tonnes last month. The country, which is the Australian port’s top destination, received 34.51 million tonnes in June 2016.
Shipments to South Korea totalled 3.60 million tonnes, up 19.2% compared with 3.02 million tonnes in June 2016, while those to Japan dropped 36.5% to 1.52 million tonnes from 2.40 million tonnes a year earlier.
Taiwan’s share was 790,165 tonnes, up 0.4% from 786,819 tonnes a year earlier.
Shipments to Indonesia halved to 173,972 tonnes, from 349,641 tonnes in June 2016.
BHP and Fortescue Metals Group export their products mainly through the Port of Port Hedland.
