Morgan Stanley has revised its forecast for NVIDIA's (NVDA, Financial) GB200 chip shipments for 2025, lowering the expected quantity from 30,000-35,000 units to 20,000-25,000 units, with the worst-case scenario being less than 20,000 units. This adjustment could impact the GB200 supply chain by $30 billion to $35 billion, exerting pressure on related semiconductor companies.
The downgrade is attributed to Microsoft’s reduced capital expenditure growth and the underdeveloped cloud computing and AI infrastructure, particularly the network and power infrastructure related to GB200. Additionally, there are ongoing debates about the efficiency of large language models, which may continue through 2025, affecting stock valuations.
Despite a recovery in cloud computing capital expenditure, Morgan Stanley predicts this growth cycle may peak by mid-2025, with a slowdown expected in the fourth quarter. NVIDIA's stock has been under pressure, with a 23.8% decline from its January high, resulting in a market value loss of $893.1 billion.
Market analysts attribute NVIDIA's stock drop to the release of DeepSeek's new open-source model R1, which offers similar performance to high-end GPUs at a lower cost, potentially reducing demand for NVIDIA's products. However, long-term prospects for AI technology and NVIDIA remain positive, as advancements continue to drive demand for computing power.
As the U.S. earnings season continues, focus remains on AI-related capital expenditures, with companies like Meta and Microsoft significantly investing in AI and data centers. Both companies highlight the importance of inference, suggesting a potential shift from NVIDIA's GPU chips to alternative technologies.
