Messy Mets: Blunders cost Pedro win vs. Yanks

May 22 NEW YORK (AP) — No longer a regular starter, Bernie Williams keeps coming up with key hits.

After Pedro Martinez dominated for seven innings, Williams capped a three-run rally in the eighth with a go-ahead double Sunday that sent the New York Yankees to a 5-3 victory over the New York Mets in the finale of the season's first Subway Series.

"Obviously, it means a lot," said Williams, the Yankees' regular center fielder from 1993 until he lost his job in early May. "I'm just trying to make the best out of the opportunity that I've been given. Hopefully, a lot more will come."

Following eighth-inning errors by Mets third baseman David Wright and shortstop Jose Reyes, Hideki Matsui tied the score with a two-run, two-out, opposite-field single off Roberto Hernandez. Williams, whose grand slam rallied the Yankees to victory in Seattle on Monday, then pulled a double down the right field line.

"It's taken a little time for him to adjust emotionally," Yankees manager Joe Torre said. "Today was big for him."

The Yankees, whose starting lineup was missing Derek Jeter (swollen elbow), Gary Sheffield (sore hand) and Jorge Posada (sore shoulder), took two of three at Shea Stadium. Alex Rodriguez called it the biggest regular-season win in his 1½ seasons with the Yankees, who had been 0-for-18 this year when trailing after seven innings.

The Mets, without Carlos Beltran (strained quadriceps) and Kaz Matsui (strained upper back), had been 17-2 when leading after seven.

"We could have swept this series," Hernandez said.

Martinez, 11-12 against the Yankees for Boston in the regular season and playoffs combined, allowed just one run and four hits in seven innings, struck out six and walked one. Pushed back two days after receiving a cortisone shot to his hip, he was facing his longtime nemeses for the first time in a Mets uniform.

"It was no different at all, except that this time around I had more fans behind me and … less hate words," he said. "I have nothing to say against the Yankees or anyone there."

Rodriguez's seventh error of the season led to a pair of unearned runs in the second against Carl Pavano (4-2). Cliff Floyd's 12th homer made it 3-0 in the third.

Martinez got out of a bases-loaded jam in a 31-pitch first inning, retiring Jason Giambi on a foulout to Wright, who reached into the stands. That was the first of 13 straight outs for the three-time Cy Young Award winner, who needed just 44 pitches to get through the next four innings.

Before 55,953, the largest regular-season crowd at Shea since 1965, Tony Womack started the comeback when he singled leading off the sixth, stole second and scored on Rodriguez's single.

Womack reached in the eighth against Dae-Sung Koo when Wright dropped his one-out grounder, and Ruben Sierra followed with a potential double-play grounder to second. Miguel Cairo tossed the ball to Reyes, who dropped it as he came across the bag.

"I tried to be too quick," Reyes said.

Hernandez (2-2) relieved and Jeter, who was hit by a pitch Saturday, ran for Sierra. The Yankees then pulled off a double steal as Wright failed to cover third, playing back with Rodriguez up.

"We might have crossed up on some signs," Wright said.

Rodriguez fouled out to first, bringing up Hideki Matsui. Mets manager Willie Randolph elected not to intentionally walk him to pitch to Williams, in an 11-for-61 slide. Hideki Matsui fouled off three straight pitches to the left side before singling on what he thought was a sinking fastball.

"The pitch I threw to Matsui was probably the best pitch I threw in the entire sequence," Hernandez said. "They usually ground to shortstop or pop up that pitch. He stayed with it."

Williams took a ball before the double, which raised his average to .236.

"As long as we're winning, it makes it a little easier," he said of his part-time role, adding that his goal was to "work myself into the lineup by hitting, by producing."

Williams, starting because of the injury to Sheffield, is 36 and his skills have declined, prompting the Yankees to start Hideki Matsui in center.

Torre said telling Williams he no longer was an everyday starter was the toughest task he's had since becoming the Yankees' manager.

"To handle what he's handled with the class which he's handled it doesn't surprise me," Torre said. "But you know emotionally he's taking a hit for this thing because he's used to playing every day, he's used to being in the middle of the lineup and he certainly isn't used to just playing off the bench."

Pavano, sent to Montreal in the 1997 trade that brought Martinez to the Red Sox, won his fourth straight decision. He allowed three runs, but two were unearned because of Rodriguez's error.

"He didn't allow the error to ruffle him at all," Torre said.

There were runners at second and third when Martinez, who entered 0-for-21 this year at the plate, hit a bouncer that kicked off Rodriguez's glove. Reyes followed with an RBI single.

"That was a ridiculous error," Rodriguez said. "Probably the easiest play that I had all year."

Mike Stanton, Tom Gordon and Mariano Rivera followed Pavano, with Rivera getting his ninth save in 11 chances. Tino Martinez made it easier for his closer with a run-scoring single in the ninth off Mike DeJean.

"Good teams don't give other teams second chances," Hernandez said. "We've got to learn we can't do that."Game notes
After the next turn through the rotation, the Yankees plan to pass over right-hander Chien-Ming Wang because of an off day to keep left-hander Randy Johnson on four days' rest. Wang will pitch Wednesday against Detroit because Torre wants the Big Unit to start Friday's s

NBA Playoff Notebook: Detroit wins with defense
By Warren Blatt, NBA Editor

(Sports Network) - Detroit took a 1-0 lead against No. 1 Miami in the best- of-seven Eastern Conference finals, as Rasheed Wallace scored 20 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead the Pistons to a 90-81 victory over the Heat at AmericanAirlines Arena.

Wallace played 30 minutes, blocked a team-high three shots and was 7-of-10 from the field, including 4-for-5 from beyond the arc for the defending world champions. Chauncey Billups, who was the MVP of the 2004 NBA Finals, finished with 18 points and five assists, while Richard Hamilton netted 16 in 46 minutes of action.

The Pistons played great defense against the explosive Heat, as they held Miami under 99 points for the first time in this year's playoffs. The Heat, who earned four-game sweeps against New Jersey and Washington in rounds one and two, had scored at least 100 points in seven of their first eight postseason contests.

Miami's All-Star guard Dwyane Wade was a dismal 7-of-25 (28 percent) from the floor in Game 1, and finished with 16 points, which is his lowest total in this year's playoffs, and four assists. Shaquille O'Neal, who has been bothered by a thigh injury and did not play in Games 3 and 4 in the semis versus the Wizards, ended with 20 points and five rebounds.

"We played a pretty good game, we just made a lot of stupid mental errors," said O'Neal after Game 1's loss. "Not all of the guys have been in a game so hard fought. It was a test for us. We've had it too easy for too long. Now that we have a test, we have to come out and fight. We had a lot of opportunities to win the game, but we just didn't we've just got to go back and look at the tape, make adjustments and come out and do what we gotta do, do what we're supposed to do. We took a lot of good shots, but Eddie (Jones) shot one that went in and out.

"I missed a couple of hooks, but we've just gotta take the opportune shots, especially in a game in the fourth quarter when there are still a lot of opportunities to win the game. And you know, this is nothing but a test for us, and we're not going to hang our heads now, we're just going to continue to fight.

Eddie Jones led the Heat with 22 points and eight rebounds in Game 1. He was 9-of-13 from the field, including 3-for-4 from three-point range.

The Heat, who trailed the Pistons 44-43 at halftime of the opener, scored just 14 points in the fourth quarter and a total of 38 in the second half. Miami made just under 47 percent of its shots from the field and committed nine turnovers in the contest.

"Well, I thought defensively we guarded about as well as we could the whole game," said Detroit head coach Larry Brown after Game 1's victory. "You know, when they made the run, we kind of got a little bit quick and maybe went a little bit one on one and got them some easy baskets.

"We knew they were going to come back, and when they did, we just limited them to one shot, got some turnovers, got some blocks, got a charge. We did all the things I think you would hope to do down the stretch. I think both teams are a lot alike on the defensive end. They're hard to score against, and I'm hopeful that we are. We really executed down the stretch, used the clock good, never gave them much opportunities to run other than that one brief moment. So good win for us.

Forward Tayshaun Prince and Defensive Player of the Year Ben Wallace were also solid for Detroit in Game 1s' win. Prince scored 13 points in 42 minutes of court time, while All-Star center Ben Wallace netted 13, pulled down a game- high 13 boards and blocked two shots.

Prince frustrated Wade defensively, and that may have been his biggest contribution in Game 1s victory.

"You know, it's tough, tried to just keep him (Wade) in front of me for the most part," said Prince. "He's a lot quicker than me. I just tried to use my length as an advantage and make him take shots over me and try to keep my defenders as close as I possibly can. That's tough to do in pick and rolls. My guys behind me have been ready to help when he'd get past me and things like that, so it definitely helped.

History would not be on Miami's side if it loses Game 2, as it has never come back to win a playoff series after dropping the first two games of the set. Detroit, which has won 21 of its last 23 playoff series when winning Game 1, has never lost a set after winning Games 1 and 2.

Miami will try and put Game 1's loss behind them.

"Very tough in a playoff and tough to lose at home," said Wade. "You've got to come here tomorrow and learn from it, but at the same time, we learn from what we did wrong and we learn from what we did right and we take that into Game 2.

The Pistons frustrated Wade and did not allow Shaq to dominate. Their defense was once again the main reason they came away with an important playoff victory in Game 1. Detroit knows what makes it win, and that is defense.

Suns face 0-2 deficit after defense rests again

Paul Coro
The Arizona Republic
May. 25, 2005 12:00 AM

The Suns will spend today and the next two off days of the Western Conference finals acting like it is impossible to fail. It's fun to think that way.

They talked a lot this season about how it was possible to win an NBA title with splendid offense and marginal defense. But even marginal defense during crunch time against San Antonio does not seem possible based on this series' ominous openers.

Two days after blowing Game 1 by giving up 43 fourth-quarter points, Phoenix lost Game 2 by looking as defenseless as lambs in the final 7 1/2 minutes of a 111-108 loss at America West Arena.
The Spurs turned every Suns stumble into a fall, making Phoenix's 55.7 percent shooting irrelevant. In suffering their first consecutive losses since early April, the Suns are up against odds as bad as their preseason line to win the title. Only three teams (the 1969 Lakers, the 1994 Rockets and 2005 Mavericks) have come back to win a best-of-seven series after losing the first two games at home.

The youth, playoff inexperience and defensive knocks on Phoenix did not keep it from posting the best record in the league or gliding through two playoff rounds. But it is a mammoth hump when it comes to beating San Antonio, something that has not happened in the teams' past 10 meetings in which Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili played.

"A lot of it is experience and being there," Suns coach Mike D'Antoni said. "A lot of times, you have to sample the waters before you jump in."

The theme of Tuesday's game was all too familiar. Again, Phoenix has a dreadful first quarter to regret.

The Suns were down 31-21 after one quarter because of seven turnovers, four by Steve Nash that led to eight San Antonio points. It was Phoenix's seventh straight first-quarter deficit.

That start will be topped in their nightmares by the memory of losing another lead at home down the stretch. The Suns were ahead 93-88 with 7:50 to play but the Spurs never panicked. Phoenix, badly missing Joe Johnson's defense again, stopped San Antonio from scoring on only one possession for the remainder of the game.

"Their execution and our lack of it," Suns guard Jim Jackson said.

The Spurs even did it with Duncan playing the entire fourth quarter in foul trouble. He started it with four fouls and played the last 4:15 with five fouls. Duncan, 1 for 7 at halftime, scored 25 of his 30 points in the second half with terrific efficiency.

"He really played with a lot of poise," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said.

Phoenix, down to a six-man rotation, still was scoring with San Antonio enough to lead 102-100 with 2:56 to play. Nash, 29 points and 15 assists despite 46 minutes and double teams, and Amaré Stoudemire, 37 points, riddled San Antonio again. Stoudemire has scored at least 35 in every game this season against San Antonio.

"They are too darn good and our defense isn't as good as those two guys are," Popovich said.

The Spurs came out of a timeout and smoothly executed a play that ended with Robert Horry's three-pointer to take the lead for good. Quentin Richardson had left him for a moment to double Duncan.

After Nash missed a tough jump shot with Tony Parker closing in, Ginobili piled it on with a spectacular drive on Shawn Marion. Ginobili put the ball around his back, twisted toward the basket and scored.

"They have been just phenomenal in the fourth quarter," Nash said.

When Stoudemire missed a layup on the ensuing possession, Ginobili made it 107-102 with 1:19 to go on a jump shot over Marion. With easy scores and San Antonio's two free-throw misses, the Suns got one last shot to tie. Nash had 4.2 seconds to get down court against Parker. He leaned around a double-teaming Bruce Bowen to put up a three that would have tied the game at the buzzer. It was dead-on but short, just like Phoenix's effort again.

"We ain't dead yet," Marion said. "We think we can come out there and get some games."

Dudek bedankt,
