Ik zat net voor de gein nog even wat oude berichten te lezen over het rapport van Booz Allen over Spyker. Toen stelden ze dat Spyker 500 auto's per jaar zou gaan verkopen en dat ze daarmee zeer winstgevend zouden zijn. We weten allemaal wat daarvan gekomen is. Nu heeft datzelfde Booz Allen het onderzoek gedaan naar Saab, en hierop is de business case gebaseerd. Zal wel een gigantisch succes worden.

A sportier 9-3 with aircraft-inspired styling will reportedly arrive sometime in 2012. Saab also feels that it has room to go in emerging markets like China and India, and company executives are pondering a smaller Saab to help further boost sales.

DETROIT, Michigan — The newly reorganized Saab is steadily reducing its breakeven point and has more than enough cash to survive as it begins to rebuild sales, its chief executive officer said Tuesday.

After a near-liquidation by former parent General Motors, Saab must rebuild its sales from scratch and is focused on restructuring its operations, said Jan Ake Jonsson, SAAB president and ceo.

"We had been closed down for seven weeks," Jonsson told reporters in Detroit.

"We couldn't order any material or do any advertising because we were in liquidation," he said. "Now we have about 4,500 cars in inventory. We're completely focused on getting our products out as quickly as possible."

The company is currently living on reserves, including loans from the European banks and a 200 million dollar technology deal with Beijing Auto.

But Jonsson said the storied Swedish brand should be able to break even in the second half of 2011.

While Jonsson hopes to reduce operating costs to the point where Saab can break even with annual sales of 80,000 to 85,000 vehicles, he said its potential sales are significantly higher.

Jonsson is confident Saab could sell as many as 125,000 units annually "at which point we would be quite profitable."

"These are very conservative estimates," he said, noting that Saab had sold 98,000 cars in 2008 when it was still owned by GM.

In the United States, which is Saab's single largest market, Saab has reached several key objectives since its February 23 purchase by Dutch sports car maker Spyker, noted Michael Colleran, president and chief operating officer of Saab Cars North America.

SAAB USA has built a staff, re-filled the pipeline to its 207 dealers and signed an agreement with what was then GMAC but is now Ally Bank, which is providing financing to Saab dealers and customers.

Saab is now in a position where it can offer lease deals to potential customers, Colleran said. In addition, Saab North America is launching its first sales promotion and is preparing a broad advertising campaign that will utilize print, online and social media.

The automaker's US dealers have increased their orders for new vehicles, which is a sign of confidence in the new company and its plans for the future, Colleran said.

Saab also plans to resume selling cars in Canada in August, Colleran said.

It expects to have the 2011 Saab 9-5 on sale in the United States by July and will slowly expand with other vehicles already in its product pipeline as it restarts its business around the world.

"We'll have an all new product line by 2012 and the 9-5 will be the oldest vehicle," Jonnsson said.

Saab has also developed a wagon version of the 9-5, which is due out next year, as well as a 9-4X crossover sport utility vehicle, which is being built for Saab by General Motors, Jonsson said.

In addition, Saab is also working on an all-new version of the Saab 9-3 for 2012.

The styling for the 9-3 hasn't been frozen yet but it will be more sporty and aggressive than the current sedan model.

"Think aircraft," said Mueller, who said Saab has to be more distinctive to set itself off from other manufacturers.

The new Saab is also interested in developing a new compact or subcompact car, although it's "not in the product plan yet," said Jonsson.

Several other companies have come forward with offers to share technology, which Mueller said is "one of the big cultural changes in this industry since the crisis."

Saab could wind up sharing a small car platform with another manufacturer, he suggested, though he declined to offer any specifics.

Saab also has ambitious plans to expand its presence in China, Brazil and Russia and eventually India.

"You could see the day when there are more Saab's sold in China than in the US," Jonsson said.

DETROIT—Saab Automobile aims to hire an additional 350 hourly and salaried workers in Sweden as the now stand-alone car maker increases production.

About 200 hourly workers will be added by June 1, Saab Chief Executive Jan Ake Jonsson said during a media briefing Wednesday. The new hires will bolster the approximately 1,500 workers Saab now employs at its Trollhaettan, Sweden, plant.

In additional, about 150 salaried workers also are expected to be hired throughout 2010, he said. Saab currently employs a total of 3,500 people world-wide.

The hiring comes almost three months after the company was purchased by Spyker Cars NV, a Netherlands-based maker of high-end sports cars, from General Motors Co.

Saab expects to build as many as 55,000 cars this year and raise output to 100,000 next year. That could mean more hiring since Mr. Jonsson said the company will likely add a second shift at the plant.

The company is focused on lowering its break-even point. Saab currently needs to produce and sell 100,000 cars a year to be profitable. The goal is to lower that amount to between 80,000 and 85,000 within the next two years.

Meanwhile, Saab executives were in Canada on Tuesday to announce they will once again sell cars in that country. Canadian operations were virtually shut down as GM was preparing to kill Saab as part of its bankruptcy reorganization last year.

Saab said it intends to have about 20 Canadian dealers in place by August, with most receiving cars by September.

The company is also in talks with other auto makers about partnering, some time in the future, to build a Saab compact car.

Toch grappig, als je Muller mag geloven (doet iemand dat?) dan is dit nu al het geval. Hij roept tegen iedereen die het maar wil horen dat het break-even point al op 80/85 duizend auto's ligt op dit moment.

Blijkbaar is dat dus nog NIET het geval. Het ligt nog steeds op 100.000 auto's en ze HOPEN het binnen twee jaar met minimaal 15% te verlagen...

Saab Cars North America CEO Micheal Colleran divulged that Saab is once again leasing cars and that the company plans to begin marketing its products once again – using not only traditional print, but also social media and online outlets.

As for vehicle sales, the new 9-5 model has already launched in Europe with plans for it to be on sale in the U.S. this July. Colleran also commented that come 2012, the new 9-5 will be the oldest vehicle in the Saab lineup.

In addition to the U.S. market, Saab is also looking to begin expanding into developing markets like China, Brazil, Russia and India. “You could see the day when there are more Saabs sold in China than in the US,” Jonsson said.

Muller is geen eigenaar. Hij is de zetbaas van Antonov. Verder kunnen ze roepen wat ze willen maar winstgevend zijn ze nog lange niet en naar mijn persoonlijke overtuiging gaan ze dat ook niet zijn. Blijkbaar zijn er nog steeds mensen die in de sprookjes van Muller willen geloven en die weigeren de realiteit onder ogen te zien. Wat is er nu daadwerkelijk anders bij Saab dat ze nu opeens met veel lager verkopen winstgevend zouden zijn terwijl ze voor bijna een miljard euro aan schuld hebben? En dan ook nog een tegen mega rentepercentages oplopend tot wel 12 procent. Leg mij dan maar eens uit hoe ze met 80.000 auto's winstgevender kunnen zijn dan schuldenvrij onder GM.

ANALYSIS: Saab sale to Spyker works through

The David-and-Goliath transaction of Spyker buying Saab now has its sequel. Victor Muller is buying Saab’s three overseas sales companies – one of which is Saab GB. The seller is GM, writes Rob Golding.

Several dozen people within GM at Luton have had to decide whether they would stay with the big, fat, subsidised American company or go with the Dutch mergers and acquisitions specialist who has a tiny little sports car company and an extraordinary ambition.

Jonathan Nash, 51, UK managing director of the Saab sales company for more than ten years, has made his decision which might be described as jumping out of the fire and into the frying pan. He concedes that many of his pals have told him he is nuts.

He has just about finished his search for a new HQ (probably Milton Keynes) and is deep into hiring mode. It’s not that his staff won’t come with him; most will. The problem is that many of his support staff also supply services to other GM brands (Cadillac, Corvette, Hummer, Chevrolet, Vauxhall) and they ain’t going anywhere.

“I kind of owe it to Saab. I am very emotionally attached. There are some other old Saabies moving and a number of GM people who were seconded to Saab. We have about 50% of our capability,” says Nash.

GM owns three Saab sales companies in its three largest markets of US, UK and Sweden. Various arrangements arise in the other 56 markets of the world. Spyker has to buy the three biggies.

The transition to Muller ownership will be complete in August. For the next couple of months there will be this creepy interim stage of working under big company procedures but answering to instructions from an altogether more agile and entrepreneurial leadership.

Nash has seen some of the future and for him it works. A picture of a small car called the 9-1 exists as a photograph on Muller’s mobile phone (Cool Bear, J-A passim) and he knows the whole renewal plan for the current line-up.

The confidence that Nash has in risking his career and pension arises from the personality of the Saab buyers. “During the crisis over Saab’s long-term ownership, the owners’ clubs were almost as vocal as the politicians. As Muller says, all we have to do is to re-establish the passion and get our customers back and we have a business.”

He’s a canny opportunist, is Muller. He watched with interest as the on-off flirtations with Koenigsegg and Chinese buyers wobbled their course, then as Koenigsegg bottled out on the purchase of Saab he texted Bob Lutz who responded in minutes. Muller seized on the due diligence that had already been paid for by others and captured himself a Goliath on the cheap.

He was the right man in the right place at the right time. As an M&A specialist by trade he could see a decent set of due diligence papers when he read one. He could also see that the entire model renewal programme at Saab had been paid for by GM and there would be no huge and immediate engineering bill to meet. The new Saab 9-5 – bigger than, and intended as a competitor for, the BMW 5 Series – arrives in market next month. A 9-4X comes next year and is a Saabed Cadillac SRX.

For Jonathan Nash, there have been some very scary moments. But, he reflects, the scary bits are all in the past. He looks at the business plan and for him, the future works.

INTERVIEW: The Hallmark of rebuilding Saab's image

Adrian Hallmark, the former high flying head of VW brand operations in North America and Asia Pacific, is relishing the challenge of rebuilding Saab’s battered image under its Dutch Spyker Cars control, despite admitting: “you may well ask why on earth I took this job on?”

Hallmark, 47, the campaign veteran of Bentley’s global and Porsche’s UK turnarounds, claims that running VW Group’s Asia Pacific organisation with 1.3m annual sales is less involving and “tangible” than his new quest.

He says: “The more you progress through a big organisation and the greater the responsibility you get the less you feel things. I felt less involved with over one million Asian sales than pushing Bentley up from 1,000 to 10,000 units. It’s the same with Saab.”

The Briton offers the analogy of “new pairs of shoes normally hurting for a while” but adds: “After my first month at Saab it felt like a natural fit, which was a bit scary.”

Headhunted by Saab’s newly independent management, Hallmark described his global role as providing the opportunity to “get down and dirty in a big difficult job which is full of personal risks, but irresistible.”

“Previous under-utilisation of Saab’s brand potential” provides his main inspiration with three new models due over the next 13 months, covering the new 9-5 saloon and wagon plus the long overdue 9-4X SUV crossover, being built alongside Cadillac’s new SRX in GM’s Mexican plant.

Hallmark’s philosophy involves: “being able to shape things and get my hands into them. I am not a typical corporate pedlar, nor am I comfortable in big bureaucratic political environments.”

Having taken part in a whistle stop management tour of European and USA outposts, with particular emphasis on rallying morale among dealers, Hallmark maintained that a “disarmingly open and brutally honest series of presentations of our plans erased 90% of understandable cynicism and angst among retailers. It was not as dark and screwed up as you might have anticipated.”

His experience as VW’s executive vice president in North America, a lynchpin market for Saab and particularly the 9-4X, was arguably instrumental in Saab and Spyker seeking him out.

The core aim is to pull Saab’s sales up to 120,000 worldwide annual units, equivalent to the 2007 pre-crisis level, which he describes as being “ridiculous in the context of how ancient some of our models were. With Saabs, which are true Saabs again, we have a serious credible future.

“Understand where and why Audi and Saab migrated to their respective areas and you realise that we can and will build individualistic, high performance cars again. That means taking our own route and not mimicking the Germans.”

His understanding of brand values and market niches was demonstrating by identifying the GBP100,000 to GBP200,000 luxury middle ground vacuum filled by Bentley, which Hallmark described as being: “a basket case with no money, no people and no competitive products, when I landed there in 1999.”

A former colleague describes Hallmark as “generating infectious enthusiasm through a collegiate approach. But he knows when and how hard to hammer the table when applying his ultimate authority. This is not mission impossible for Adrian and he is thankful that GM has not totally destroyed Saab’s credibility and heritage. He understands the value of loyal but battered dealers.”

ZEEWOLDE (AFN) - Autofabrikant Spyker Cars heeft de overname van het Britse distributiebedrijf van Saab afgerond. Dat maakte Spyker maandag bekend.

Spyker neemt Saab Great Britain voor een onbekend bedrag over van General Motors (GM). Het Britse deel van Saab zal in de komende maanden worden losgesneden van het Amerikaanse moederconcern. Vervolgens zal het bedrijf in augustus 2010 naar een nieuwe locatie verhuizen.

Eerder dit jaar bereikten Spyker en GM al overeenstemming over de overname van Saab door de sportwagenproducent uit Zeewolde. Volgens Spyker-topman Victor Muller is de Britse markt zeer belangrijk voor Saab. ,,Groot-Brittannië stond in het verleden in de top drie van markten voor Saab en we hebben grote verwachtingen voor de toekomst'', stelde hij in een verklaring.

SAAB’S FIRST MONTHLY SALES RISE IN SWEDEN SINCE FEBRUARY 2008

Yes, we’re finally in positive territory.

Saab 9-3

Saab sold 560 units of the Saab 9-3 in May 2010, which was a rise from the 390 sold in May 2009.

That’s a rise of 43.9% year on year.

9-3 sales are still 24% down for the full year to date, but that gap will close in a big hurry now. There have been 1,551 sales of the 9-3 so far this year in Sweden.

There were 141 sales of the Saab 9-5 (outgoing model) in during May, down by 16.5% from the 169 sold in the same month last year. Considering sales were typically down by 60% or more for every one of the last 12 months, 16% down for an outgoing model is a good outcome.

These are confidence sales, people. People coming back to the brand because the brand has survived.

It’s great news and worthy of a celebration. Congratulations. In fact, it’s so significant that even DI.se have written it up in positive terms.

Sales of passenger cars increased by 37 percent in May compared to same month last year. A total of 24 994 passenger cars registered during the past month.

39 percent of cars sold was green cars. There is a slight decrease from last May when the green car had a proportion of 43 percent. So far this year, clean the proportion of 36 percent compared to 38 percent over the same period last year.

The share of diesels has increased sharply and almost every new car sold in May was a diesel. Diesel sales have risen from a rate of 36 percent in May last year to 48 percent in the year the month of May.

Volvo's sales in Sweden fell by 5 percent in May compared to the same month last year. But so far this year, Volvo's sales rose by 25 percent, 15834-19759 cars.

For the Saab was a huge boost in May of 25 percent, 559-701 cars. Meanwhile, sales in the period from January to May declined by 30 percent; 3337-2349 cars, compared to same period 2009.

We need to remind that these figures are not “sold” cars but cars delivered to customers. The data comes from the swedish vehicle registrations.Means that there are more cars "sold".

De Nederlandse registratiecijfers van Saab over de maand mei zijn inmiddels ook bekend.

En dat terwijl de verkopen in Nederland juist heel goed gaan dit jaat (mei: +20,26%, 2010: +18,28%)

En we moeten ook even in ons achterhoofd houden dat mei 2009 een rampjaar was voor Saab in Nederland. Er was namelijk geen importeur meer (faillisement Kroymans) en dus was het bijna onmogelijk om auto's te registreren. En ondanks dat lukt het ze dit jaar dus niet om meer auto's te registreren. Nogal een teken aan de wand lijkt mij...

PS Vorige maand registreerde Saab nog 39 auto's in NL. Het is te hopen dat in juni eindelijk de eerste 9-5's worden afgeleverd zodat het nog ergens op lijkt.

Spyker to Double Dealerships by Offering Sports Cars at Saab

June 2 (Bloomberg) -- Spyker Cars NV, Saab Automobile’s owner, plans to almost double the number of dealers selling its high-end sports cars this year by offering them through Saab outlets, Chief Executive Officer Victor Muller said.

“We are signing up Spyker dealerships left, right and center,” Muller said yesterday in an interview at Saab’s headquarters in Trollhaettan, Sweden.

Spyker intends to boost its dealer network to 60 from 35 in 2010, and to about 90 by the end next year, as Saab dealers open their doors to models such as the C8 Aileron, which can reach 300 kilometers (186 miles) an hour and sells for $214,990 in the U.S., he said.

Spyker bought Saab in February from General Motors Co., completing a 14-month effort by GM to unload the company. The new dealerships will help Spyker, which sold 36 cars last year and has been loss-making since it went public in 2004, to become profitable, Muller said.

The Dutch supercar maker has also started benefiting from lower prices for “generic” parts such as wind screen wiper motors that Saab gets through its higher volumes, Muller said, adding that Spyker plans to tap Saab’s engineering resources.

“Spyker will be profitable in its own right, very much helped by its sister Saab,” Muller said. “It’s wonderful that the company that saved Saab is also benefiting from having done that in its own business.”

Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, China's largest private carmaker and parent of Hong Kong-listed Geely Automobile (0175.HK), clinched a deal with Ford in March to buy Volvo Cars in China's biggest overseas auto purchase.

The goal is to present a new chief executive in connection with the final signing of the deal in August, the paper reported. Volvo Cars' current CEO, Stephen Odell, plans to leave to head Ford Europe.

Saab was acquired from General Motors GM.UL by Dutch luxury carmaker Spyker Cars (SPYKR.AS).

Jonsson declined to comment when asked by Dagens Industri about the position. "I have promised (Spyker CEO) Victor Muller to stay at Saab for a while longer," he was quoted as saying.

Volvo Cars spokesman Per-Ake Froberg said he had no comment, adding: "This is up to Geely." Saab was not immediately available.

Volvo, which last made a full-year profit in 2005 despite record sales in 2007, has bled cash in recent years and cut thousands of jobs in its quest to regain profitability.

Zhejiang Geely President Yang Jiang has said Geely, which plans to build a Volvo plant in China, will not accept losing money from Volvo "even for a year."

Saab beslist binnenkort over nieuw model

TROLLHATTAN (AFN) - Saab zal de komende maanden beslissen of het een nieuwe, kleine auto op de markt gaat brengen. Dat zei topman Victor Muller van Saabs nieuwe eigenaar Spyker Cars woensdag.

Of de auto er daadwerkelijk komt, hangt van van de economische omstandigheden, partners en financiering, aldus Muller. Saab heeft ongeveer 300 miljoen dollar nodig om een nieuw model te ontwikkelen. Op dit moment heeft de onderneming financiering nodig om het nieuwe model te gaan produceren, aangezien de bestaande gelden al een bestemming hebben.

,,Dat is mijn baan voor de komende honderd dagen'', aldus de topman. Hij ontkende dat Spyker in gesprek is met het Koreaanse Hyundai voor de levering van het chassis van de nieuwe auto, maar wilde verder niets zeggen over de gesprekken die het bedrijf voert.

De 92

Het nieuwe kleine automodel, de Saab 92, moet de iconische druppelvormige Saab van zestig jaar geleden laten herleven. ,,De 92 moet de meest verbazingwekkende, meest vernuftige en meest hoogwaardige auto worden. Het moet onomstotelijk een Saab zijn'', zei Muller.

Het model is bedoeld voor de snel groeiende markt van duurdere kleine auto's, waarop het de concurrentie moet aangaan met modellen als de Audi A1, de Fiat 500 en de Mini van BMW. De Saab 92 zal volgens Muller ,,ongeveer 10 procent'' duurder zijn dan de Mini.

Spyker

Het nieuwe type kan op zijn vroegst in 2013 op de markt verschijnen. Het zou het eerste model zijn dat volledig onder de vlag van Spyker wordt ontworpen en geproduceerd.

Muller verbond de plannen voor de 92 niet aan het verkrijgen van een beursnotering in Stockholm. ,,We zijn niet van plan op korte termijn aandelen aan te bieden.''

Eerder dit jaar werd er gehint op de beëindiging van de beursnotering in Amsterdam, in ruil voor een notering op de Londense beurs. Uiteindelijk is een duale notering in Amsterdam en Stockholm volgens Muller echter waarschijnlijker.

Saab pins hopes on new 9-5 after Spyker rescue

TROLLHATTAN, Sweden, June 1 (Reuters) - Saab is launching its first new car, the flagship 9-5, as it hopes to restore buzz and sales to the iconic Swedish brand after its rescue earlier this year by Dutch luxury carmaker Spyker (SPYKR.AS).

Amid anaemic demand -- global auto sales sank 13 percent in 2009 to a seven-year low -- Saab is aiming to more than double yearly sales to 85,000 by 2012 to avoid losses. Last year, it sold nearly 40,000 cars.

At Saab's headquarters in Trollhattan, where thousands of employees gathered in January to cheer Spyker Chief Executive Victor Muller's gutsy $400 million deal to buy Saab from General Motors [GM.UL], Saab's chief executive promised to restore the brand and the company at a launch event on Tuesday.

"The biggest challenge we have right now is to rebuild confidence and trust," Saab CEO Jan Ake Jonsson said.

"We have a workforce that has an extremely high motivation level," said Jonsson, who took the helm in 2005 while Saab was still owned by GM.

The Opel platform-based 9-5, which replaces a 13 year-old line, is mainly aimed at buyers of Audi's A6 and making it distinct from the smaller 9-3. One criticism leveled at Saab was that its older 9-5 and 9-3 models were far too similar in size.

With a base price of around 35,000 euros ($42,520), the 9-5 finally brings Saab's flagship model up to par with rivals, with lower emissions, features such as keyless entry and active four-wheel drive, and luxury comforts.

"For Saab, this is the most important product," said Muller, speaking at the launch event. "It means we are alive."

Jonsson said newer Saab models will reflect more of Saab's heritage, particularly its distinctive styling and turbo-driven engines, that has attracted affluent and design-conscious customers.

Despite its hopes, the company is keeping expectations in check, saying that it plans to sell 50,000 cars this year, compared with yearly sales of over 130,000 just five years ago.

Saab hired Adrian Hallmark from Volkswagen this year to be its chief salesman with instructions to rebuild the company's global distribution.

Saab is nearly done with replacing GM's distribution network in 23 countries, either by buying existing intermediaries or building out its own, positioning it to sell cars directly to dealerships instead of through an intermediary which should help improve the profit margin on each car, said Hallmark, who left a position heading up Volkswagen Asia to join Saab.

Saab's sales organisation will be completely separated from GM by September, and by the end of the year Saab is also planning to launch or re-launch in China, Russia, Japan, Australia, Canada, Brazil and Mexico. ($1=.8231 Euro) (Editing by Jon Loades-Carter)
