FRANKFURT (Dow Jones)-Germany's central bank expects the country's economy to grow at a stronger pace in the third quarter than in the previous three-month period.
In a monthly bulletin published Monday, the Deutsche Bundesbank projected a "marked" improvement in retail sales and noted another "clear" increase in private car registrations.
"Private consumption should also noticeably increase after the clear decline in the second quarter," the bank wrote.
The bank said that "hard" economic data for July, such as industrial production and construction, point to a "continuation of the cyclical upward movement in Germany for the third quarter of 2011."
These confirm "soft" sentiment indicators that through August indicated an "outstanding" situation in the German economy. The bank, however, warned that monthly changes in production data "considerably" exaggerated the cyclical trend, due to an unusually low number of holiday days in July.
Industrial production increased in July by 4.0% on the month in adjusted terms.
"All in all, a strong increase in economic output is to be expected in the third quarter of 2011," the bank wrote.
In the second quarter, Germany's economy, which had been driving the economic recovery in the eurozone, slowed sharply, growing only 0.1% from the first three months.
The central bank said that it was too early to tell how much households and businesses have been affected by the recent stock market declines and the worsening economic outlook. The medium-term outlook has dimmed more than expected amid the "elevated uncertainty," the bank conceded.
The bank expects the earnings potential of German banks to remain limited, despite the "positive" domestic economy. This is "especially" a result of the European sovereign debt crisis and the "accompanying increased volatility" on the financial markets.
