KPN to simplify BelBasis tariff structure

KPN plans to simplify the tariff structure of its KPN Belbasis consumer telephony deal starting next year, in order to comply with amendments in the country’s Telecommunication Act.
The start rate will be eliminated, with customers paying calls per minute, as required by the amended Telecommunications Act by that date. To compensate for the missing start rate, the rate for calls per minute for this subscription will go up.
KPN will simplify the rate structure for calls to other numbers in the Netherlands as well as for international rates within the BelBasis deal. KPN will, in line with other deals, divide the world into five zones, with each its flat rate per minute.
All 200,000 BelBasis customers will receive a personal letter from 20 November explaining the changes. Customers can also go for information to KPN's website or to customer service. KPN noted that call behaviour will largely determine whether the new tariff structure will push customers bills higher. The operator said the new structure was not implemented to create additional revenue but to comply with regulations. Customers have up to end December to cancel or change their subscription.
KPN HotSpots, Alcadis deploy Wi-Fi network in Thialf

KPN HotSpots has deployed a Wi-Fi network at the Thialf ice rink in Heerenveen, together with Alcadis, offering free access to wireless internet to all visitors. The Essent ISU World Cup saw the arrival of more than 15,000 visitors during its three days, with more than 1,000 using Wi-Fi every day.
For the Wi-Fi network in Thialf, KPN chose hardware from Wi-Fi specialist Ruckus Wireless. The Ruckus network in Thialf includes a ZoneDirector WLAN controller and a host of Ruckus ZoneFlex Access Points. The ZoneDirector forms the central point of the network, ensuring that access points communicate with each other in order for users to automatically switch to the closest access point.
KPN selected Ruckus ZoneFlex 7982 high density dual band access points. These can achieve speeds of up to 900 Mbps thanks to different radios, and serve up to 500 authenticated users.
