Interessanter wordt de 'vooruitkijkspiegel' als onderdeel van het 'commute concept'.

Stel: je hebt je navigatie niet aan, je rijdt ergens 100KM/uur en vlak voor je is stilstaand verkeer, maar dat kan je nog niet zien. Dan waarschuwt de 'commuter' je daarvoor. Zeg maar, de digitale en intelligente equivalent van het matrixbord, in je dashboard.

Vooruitblik: 'Omzetdaling TomTom duurt voort'

AMSTERDAM (AFN) - De verkoop van navigatieapparatuur- en diensten heeft TomTom het afgelopen kwartaal waarschijnlijk weer minder inkomsten opgeleverd. Dat blijkt uit een rondgang langs analisten voorafgaand aan de kwartaalcijfers die donderdag voorbeurs naar buiten worden gebracht.

De marktvorsers gaan in doorsnee uit van een omzet van 227 miljoen euro. Dat zou een verdere daling van 13,4 procent betekenen ten opzichte van de 262 miljoen euro die het bedrijf een jaar eerder aan opbrengsten behaalde. De ebitda ramen de analisten gemiddeld op 31 miljoen euro, tegen 41 miljoen euro in het tweede kwartaal van 2012.

Google lijkt mij ook een key vendor. Naast Navteq(Nokia) en TomTom de enige speler met eigen hoogwaardige wereldwijde kaarten.

Telenav gebruikt toch TomTom-content?

TomTom is de meest waarschijnlijke kandidaat om nog dit jaar te worden overgenomen. Dit is althans de uitkomst van een peiling op DFT. Ook PostNL en Ziggo zouden volgens de deelnemers echter weleens opgeslokt kunnen worden.

Van de bijna 1400 deelnemers aan de peiling meent 38% dat er nog dit jaar een bod komt op TomTom. Geheel onverwacht komt deze score niet, want het navigatiebedrijf wordt geregeld als overnameprooi voor met name Apple genoemd.
Opmerkelijker is dat 27% denkt dat PostNL binnen vijf maanden wordt overgenomen, omdat er nauwelijks overnamegeruchten de ronde doen. Het postbedrijf dankt zijn score waarschijnlijk aan de krachtige opmars sinds het dieptepunt begin april, die slechts deels verklaard kan worden door fundamentele verbeteringen.
Ziggo kwam tot een enigszins teleurstellende score 24%. Gezien de overnamegolf in de sector wordt het namelijk waarschijnlijk geacht dat UPC-moeder Liberty Global op een gegeven moment zijn minderheidsbelang in de kabelmaatschappij zal uitbouwen.
Helemaal onderaan staat Corbion, dat op de beurs nog als CSM door het leven gaat. Diverse experts zien Corbion als een mooie aanvulling voor onder meer DSM, maar slechts 11% van de DFT-bezoekers denkt dat het nog dit jaar tot vuurwerk komt.

Mapping Heats Up As Apple Buys Embark, Google Integrates Waze...What's Next?

Maps and location based services are becoming increasingly important in what I call the Always On, Always Connected lifestyle.

Need to find some food, a hot beverage or other refreshment? Use an app like Yelp YELP -0.35% or Restaurant Finder with your smartphone location services turned on or use a company specific app like the ones from Starbucks SBUX +0.01% or McDonald’s that help you the location of store nearest you, complete with hours, menu and even the phone number.

Need directions to and from a particular location? Use a mapping app from Apple AAPL +1.72%, Google GOOG +0.22%, Nokia NOK +0.31%’s HERE Maps app, AOL AOL +0.37%’s MapQuest, Yahoo YHOO -0.04% Maps or Blackberry Maps.

Looking to find your friends, make new ones or make the most where you are? Foursquare is to the rescue as is the My Friend Map application on Facebook FB +2.47%, Tripadvisor (TRIP), Apple’s Friend Finders app and others.

That’s just scratching the surface and I am sure you can rattle off several other obvious uses that I haven’t mentioned. Much as we did with GPS units in cars, we are leaving paper maps behind and shifting to on the go consumption with our smartphones and tablets. That’s taken a bite out of Rand McNally’s map business, but even that company has premium mapping apps available.

As we continue to increasingly use these applications — or perhaps a better way to phrase it is to say we are becoming increasingly reliant on them — companies like Apple and Google are stepping up their game.

Google integrates Waze. This past June Google acquired Waze and Google recently integrated Waze community-reported, real-time traffic reports into the mobile versions of Google Maps. Now when a Waze user report accidents, traffic jams, construction delays and more on Waze, the updates will also appear on the Google Maps app. On the flip side, Waze users gain new features as well including the availability of built-in Google Search in the Android and iOS versions of the app. One thing to keep in mind, is that Waze was the most recent acquisition completed by Google to improve Google Maps. Previous ones included Zagat and Frommer’s travel guide business from John Wiley & Sons (JW.A). More on this down below.

Prior to Google winning the bid for Waze, speculation was there were a number of other interested companies including Facebook and at one point Apple. Following the lackluster launch of its Maps app that fell far short of expectations and resulted in an apology from Apple CEO Tim Cook, a common view was Apple needed to acquire Waze to beef up its map offering. Obviously Apple did not buy Waze, but Apple does employ a strategy of quietly acquiring small technology companies that it folds into the company with a goal of improving or expanding its offerings. Examples include app search engine company Chomp, music streaming provider Lala.com, and mobile advertising firm Quattro Wireless among others.

Apple scoops up mapping companies. Apple is no stranger to acquiring companies to build and improve its mapping efforts. In 2009 it acquired Placebase and then in 2010 web-based mapping company Poly9 was also acquired. A year later Apple bought 3-D mapping firm C3 Technologies. That was followed by a string of acquisitions this past July including Locationary and Hopstop.com. Locationary, a Toronto-based startup that organizes data on local businesses, is expected to enhance that information with a data exchange platform dubbed “Saturn,” which aims to quickly eliminate out-of-date information. The same day Apple acquired Locationary, it also acquired Hopstop.com, a public transit app which shows users in hundreds of cities how to get to and fro using public transit. Last week, Apple acquired Embark, a company that also develops apps aimed at public transport users. It seems Apple is making good on its promise to improve Maps.

Nokia gets 3-D mapping. Google and Apple are not the only players improving their map solutions. Much like in 2001 when it was early in talking about the mobile Internet , Nokia was an early mover in maps as well. Nokia took a giant step into the mapping world when it acquired NavTeq for $8.1 billion or $78 per share in 2008. That followed Nokia’s acquisition of Gate5 in 2007. Despite those moves, however, Nokia arguably languished in maps as Google gained ground and soon both Blackberry and Apple became competitors. In response, to Apple’s 3-D mapping, Nokia aquired 3-D map-technology maker Earthmine Inc. in November of last year, and overhauled its online and map app by launching Here soon after. While Apple tends to keep most if not all of its services proprietary, Nokia like Google provides maps and related solutions to other companies, such as Amazon.com AMZN -0.33%, Yahoo, Daimler and Nikon .

Not to sit on its laurels, this past July Blackberry and TomTom (TMOAY)announced an agreement inwhich TomTom will be providing real-time traffic information to the native maps app found in the BlackBerry 10 O/S.

Thus far it seems like a big game of catch up to compete with Google Maps, which has arguably become the go to map service, in part because it is free and available on many platforms and devices. I have to admit that so far it is my preferred mapping application on my iPhone 5. Some will argue that this one or that one is better and that’s fine. The question is what’s next and how do these companies transform the experience from location and direction to a more robust set of services?

While Apple is working on Passbook, which may grow from a ticketing and coupon offering to a more robust mobile payment system, Google has a number of products — Google Wallet, Google Checkout and Google Offers — that could be combined with a Google Maps that has integrated Waze, Zagat and the Frommer’s guides for a true location based service experience.

Ook bij TomTom vergissen veel beleggers zich.

Het gebruik van TomTom-kaarten op de smarthone staat nog maar net in de kinderschoenen. De inkomsten uit de Apple-deal (Samsung, BlackBerry, Telenav, China-Autonavi etc.) zijn vrijwel zeker gebaseerd op betaling naar rato van het gebruik. Dat gaat naarmate de consument leert omgaan met de apps op de smartphone de komende jaren steeds harder en harder groeien.

Facebook is niet de meest voor de hand liggende koper van TomTom, maar ze hebben geld zat en kunnen vrij eenvoudig €4-€5 miljard op tafel leggen om de kaarten te kopen en deze snel ten gelde te maken.
Apple ligt meer voor de hand. En ook partijen als Samsung etc. kunnen een grotere eigen gebruikersbase aanboren en exploiteren dan TomTom. Vanuit die optiek is het geen slecht idee om de kaarten voor €20 te verkopen aan een grote partij en direct in de deal inbegrepen een langlopend licentiecontract af te sluiten.

Met €25 ben ik op korte termijn ook wel tevreden.
