ArcelorMittal Indiana Harbor BF revamp nearing completion

The biggest blast furnace in the Western Hemisphere is coming back online after a lengthy outage this summer.

Mr Louis Schorsch CEO of ArcelorMittal Americas said that “The No. 7 blast furnace at ArcelorMittal Indiana Harbor East, formerly Inland Steel, is about halfway through the process of ramping back up after USD 70 million planned maintenance project. Major repairs on the furnace in East Chicago were finished about a week earlier than expected.”

Mr Schorsch said that "It's hard to overstate the importance of this No. 7 furnace to us. It had been, I could say, limping along for the last year and a half or so, while we prepared for this major outage. That's going to give us probably about 1,000 tonnes per day of additional hot metal as we bring that back on."

According to Steel Market Update, the blast furnace is capable of producing up to 11,500 tonnes of raw steel per day. It was first constructed in 1980 and last relined in 2003. Blast Furnace No. 7 is the centerpiece of the century old steelmaking complex, where about 4,900 workers make metal for the automotive, appliance, contractor application, distribution, strip converter and tubular markets. The mill has four other blast furnaces and can make up to 9.5 million tons of steel a year.

Theodoor Gilissen schrapt ArcelorMittal
door onze financiële redactie
AMSTERDAM -

Mijnbouwconcern Rio Tinto verhoogt winst

DONDERDAG 7 AUGUSTUS 2014, 09:59 uur | 294 keer gelezen

Goldman Sachs sees iron ore rout in 2015

Bloomberg reported that iron ore will extend a drop through 2015 when an increase in seaborne supply that’s spurred a global glut is set to accelerate.

Goldman Sachs Group Inc said that while the expansion in supply will probably moderate in the H2 of 2014, the trend rate of growth in seaborne supply exceeds demand by a ratio of three to one. Goldman kept its forecast for the steelmaking raw material at an average of USD 80 per tonne in 2015 from USD 106 this year.

Prices have tumbled 29% in 2014 as companies from Rio Tinto Group to BHP Billiton Limited increased output, betting higher volumes will more than offset falling prices.

Deutsche Bank AG and Morgan Stanley see lower rates through 2016. Fortescue Metals Group Limited has said that it’s completed USD 9.2 billion expansion to boost annual output to 155 million tonnes.

Goldman analysts Mr Christian Lelong and Mr Amber Cai said that “The shift to oversupply started barely six months ago and the adjustment phase is far from over. Seaborne supply is set to accelerate again in 2015 while Chinese steel production growth slows further.”

Chinese iron ore and steel futures stagnant on Tuesday

Reuters reported that Chinese steel and iron ore futures barely moved in the morning session with the market waiting for signs the government will act to support major steel consuming sectors like property in the coming months.

Rebar prices on the Shanghai Futures Exchange ended the morning unchanged at CNY 3,107 per tonne.

Reuters reported that the most active iron ore contract for September delivery on the Dalian Commodity Exchange ended the morning down 0.9% at CNY 679 per tonne.

Iron ore with 62 percent grades for immediate delivery into China .IO62-CNI=SI inched up for the third session in a row to USD 95.10 per tonne but it remains 27% lower than at the same time last year.

Credit restrictions and stagnant domestic demand have put many Chinese steel mills on the brink of closure, but although product prices remain close to 10 year lows, the rapid decline in iron ore prices has eased some of the pressure.

Siemens start operation an electric arc furnace at Baku Steel

Azerbaijani steel producer Baku Steel has put into operation an electric arc furnace supplied by Siemens Metals Technologies. The new furnace is part of an expansion project with which Baku Steel wishes to boost its annual production capacity to around 1.1 million tonnes of steel.

Highlights
1. Production capacity increases by 150,000 tonnes per year.
2. Dust emissions drop to a maximum of 10 milligrams per standard cubic meter.

The electric steel plant was equipped with an off gas cleaning system as part of the project, so its dust emissions can be reduced to a maximum of 10 milligrams per standard cubic meter. Recently, Siemens also modernized the electric steel plant's ladle furnace and installed a dynamic compensation system.

Baku Steel Company is the leading producer of structural steels in Azerbaijan. With the new 50 tonne electric arc furnace from Siemens, the company can produce 500,000 tonnes of steel a year, some 150,000 tonnes more than with the previous plant. This means that Baku Steel's production capacity will grow to an annual total of more than 1.1 million tonnes.

The off gas cleaning system from Siemens comprises a primary dedusting system for the electric arc furnace and the 50 tonne ladle furnace as well as secondary dedusting system for the hall. The overall system has a capacity of around 950,000 Nm³/h. The fully automatic off gas cleaning system limits the dust content in exhaust gases to a maximum of 10 milligrams per standard cubic meter, ensuring that dust emissions from Baku Steel's steel mill will meet European environmental standards.

TATA Steel hikes production at English plant

PTI reported that TATA Steel is ramping up production at its facility in the northeast of England to surpass its nominal 170,000 tonnes per year capacity to support rising customer demand.

Teesside Service Centre at Redcar, next to the company's Teesside Beam Mill, is the only steel sections processing facility in Britain which is backed up by an adjacent production capability.

Mr Ian Beveridge director of construction structures for TATA Steel said that "We have established Teesside Service Centre to be able to offer customers a uniquely flexible service. The location at the end of a mill production line gives customers the option of buying ex rolling or ex stock."

He said that "Furthermore, the investments we've made in logistics, new handling and processing equipment mean we're able to offer a product and delivery service with unrivalled speed and efficiency. That all adds up to Teesside Service Centre being the leading distribution facility in the UK and the benchmark in our industry."

Following installation of the last of the new processing equipment due on site, the new facility is looking to surpass its nominal 170,000 tonnes per year capacity in order to support increasing customer demand.

The centre's product range of sections, including structural hollow sections, serves a wide variety of construction and infrastructure projects from new schools, hospitals, sports complexes and large-scale distribution depots, to the iconic buildings in London.

The specially designed site for TATA Steel's UK sections distribution activities was established in 2012. Based around an existing warehouse on the Redcar plant site, a modern stocking facility was created with new handling and processing equipment. Outside stocking areas were reorganised and new access roads built.

Glencore courts Guinea's iron ore treasures - Document

Reuters reported that miner and commodity trader Glencore has expressed interest in iron deposits in Guinea although the company had not pitched for a stake in Simandou, the country's largest deposit.

Glencore is the latest mining major looking to invest in iron ore assets in Guinea. Most interest is focused on Simandou, one of the world's biggest deposits. Any potential investors in Simandou are treading carefully, however.

Israeli owned BSG Resources, which was stripped of its license to develop part of Simandou following a Guinean corruption investigation is seeking arbitration and has threatened to sue companies that invest in its former license area.

Three sources close to the government said London listed Glencore had indicated its interest in investing in Simandou, in a meeting with government officials in Conakry in June.

A copy of a power point presentation, which the sources said a Glencore representative delivered at the meeting, includes a reference to Glencore having the financial and technical ability to develop big projects in the region and the willingness to proceed very quickly together with the government to the exploitation phase of iron ore projects.

A spokesman for Glencore said that the company had not made any presentation expressing interest in the Simandou mine. Glencore would be well placed to cooperate with other companies that hold interests in Simandou, including Rio Tinto .

Glencore, whose exposure to iron ore is much smaller than that of rivals Vale, Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton , has in the past been critical of rivals for pursuing costly greenfield projects. It has also criticised them for producing large additional volumes of iron ore, which have driven down prices by almost a third this year.

In the presentation, the Swiss based company said that it is keen to become one of the top five producers of iron ore through projects in Africa. Iron ore is an absolute priority for Glencore, because it is the only sector where the company wants to strengthen its position noticeably.

Iranian iron ore production on verge of 8 million tones

TNA reporetd that Iran produced 7.988 million tonnes of iron ore in spring 2014, which corresponds to the first quarter of the current Iranian calendar year.

Coal concentrate and aluminum ingot production hit 252,100 tonnes and 89,400 tonnes in the mentioned period of time, respectively.

Iran exported some 2.8 million tonnes of iron ore in the first two months of the current Iranian calendar year (March 21 to May 20).

The figure showed that 9% decrease compared to the same period last year. Pakistan, China, the United Arab Emirates, Turkmenistan, and Iraq were the main destinations for Iran's exported iron ore.

Iron ore was at the top of the list of Iran's exported non-oil goods in the previous calendar year (ended on March 20), but it dropped to the fifth place in the first two months of current year.

The global price of iron ore has fallen to below USD 90 per tonne in 2014. Iran exported around 20 million tonnes of iron ore in the previous calendar year, which ended March 20.

Australia's top iron ore port may face delays as union fight escalates

Reuters reported that Tug boat engineers at Port Hedland, Australia's biggest iron ore port plan to stop work for four hours on August 9, 11 and 13 over a pay dispute which would slow exports from BHP Billiton and Fortescue Metals Group.

The threatened industrial action marks a step up in the dispute between tug workers and operator Teekay Shipping at Port Hedland, which handles a quarter of the world's seaborne iron ore, mostly going to China, Japan and South Korea.

However BHP, the top exporter out of Port Hedland and Teekay said that they would take steps to stop the industrial action by the Australian Institute of Marine and Power Engineers as they believed the union had missed a deadline to file notice of a work stoppage.

BHP Billiton believes the proposed action by the AIMPE is unlawful given it falls outside the protected action ballot order and the company intends to pursue all options available to prevent it.

Tug boat captains, engineers and deck hands have been demanding higher pay and more leave from Teekay following a one third increase in iron ore shipments through Port Hedland over the past year that has stretched their work hours as the tug boats guide iron ore vessels in and out of the port. Teekay is continuing to negotiate with the three unions and is considering its legal options.

The engineers' strike would be the first to hit Port Hedland following three months' of threats but the union said the work stoppages would have minimal impact on shipments as they have been timed to coincide with low tides at the port.

Mr Andrew Williamson senior national organiser for the Australian Institute of Marine and Power Engineers said that “It's a shot across the bow. We're hoping it focuses minds so we can sit down and common sense will prevail.”

BC Iron tips iron ore price lift

AAP reported that Pilbara iron ore miner BC Iron predicts the iron ore price will head above USD 100 per tonne over the next six months as demand for the company's product remains strong.

Mr Morgan Ball CEO of BC Iron said that the recent experience of iron ore price falls and slight rebounds had been reasonably similar to 2012. Prices came down and discounts on tier two iron ore creeped up a bit and then they came back again, and I think we're seeing that again."

Mr Ball said that iron ore is trading around USD 95 per tonne after dipping to USD 89 earlier in the year. Around USD 90 appeared to be a natural floor, taking into account changes to Chinese domestic production. Admittedly it's about USD 10 to USD 15 lower than what we thought which was about USD 100 to USD 110.

He said that believes the iron ore price will continue to creep up over the next six months. I'd like to think it will be above USD 100 per tonne. Fluctuations in the Australian dollar would be important for iron ore miners over the next few months. A fall in the Australian dollar and lift in the iron ore price would be a nice combination.

He added that there was still potential to expand operations in the Pilbara, but for now the company was focused on maintaining production of 6 million tonnes per annum at its Nullagine joint venture project over the next six years.
