EU must put an end to Female Genital Mutilation - once and for all!
ECR MEP and vocal campaigner for ending Female Genital Mutilation around the world Assita Kanko asks the EU to step-up to put an end to FGM. Speaking ahead of tomorrow's international Day of Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation, Kanko said:
"There must be zero tolerance when it comes to the practice of Female Genital Mutilation. It is a crime against your body, your mind, and your physical autonomy.
"Through practical training, cooperation, information sharing, international diplomacy, and crucially through showing zero tolerance, the EU should aim to solve this issue at all levels of society."
As a young girl, Kanko herself became the victim of genital mutilation in the country of her birth, Burkina Faso. She is also calling for support for survivors of this practice.
On the initiative of Kanko and the European Conservative & Reformists Group, the European Parliament agreed to debate and vote on a resolution on a EU Strategy to put an end to Female Genital Mutilation around the World on 12th of February in Strasbourg.
Goed initiatief:)
