Gas from The Netherlands despite risk of earthquakes? | Focus on Europe

As Russia tightens gas supplies to western Europe, the Groningen gas field in northeastern Netherlands – the biggest of its kind in Europe – has taken on new importance. It holds enough gas to replace three years of Russian gas supplies to the EU.

But, the Dutch government plans to close the field next year because of the risk of earthquakes caused by gas extraction. Now calls are growing for a rethink. There’s little appetite in the region, however, for prolonging gas production.

Russia ‘looting’ Sudan’s gold reserves, Sudanese call for protests

CNN published an investigation that had been seven months in the making disclosing how “Russia is plundering gold in Sudan to boost Putin's war effort in Ukraine” with the complicity of Sudanese military rulers. Following the publication, some Sudanese have called for new marches of the millions to protest against Russia’s looting of gold today.

Sudan is the third largest producer of precious metals in Africa. CNN’s investigation shows the extent to which Russia smuggles gold out of Sudan, bypassing the county’s official gold export regulations.

The publication starts with a striking example:

“Days after Moscow launched its bloody war on Ukraine, a Russian cargo plane stood on a Khartoum runway, a strip of tarmac surrounded by red-orange sand. The aircraft's manifest stated it was loaded with cookies. Sudan rarely, if ever, exports cookies.

“A heated debate transpired between officials in a back office of Khartoum International Airport. They feared that inspecting the plane would vex the country's increasingly pro-Russian military leadership. Multiple previous attempts to intercept suspicious Russian carriers had been stopped. Ultimately, however, the officials decided to board the plane.

“Inside the hold, colourful boxes of cookies stretched out before them. Hidden just beneath were wooden crates of Sudan's most precious resource. Gold. Roughly one ton of it”.

This example is one of at least 16 known Russian gold smuggling flights out of Sudan in the past year and a half, CNN explains.

'Estimates are that between 50 per cent and 80 per cent of Sudan’s gold is smuggled out of the country'

Exiled Russian oligarch says Putin doesn't just want to annex Ukraine anymore, he's trying to 'destroy' it

An exiled Russian oligarch said he believes Russian leader Vladimir Putin has gone beyond trying to annex Ukraine and now wants to "destroy" the country.

Leonid Nevzlin, a former oil tycoon who was forced to flee Russia two decades ago, weighed in this week on what he thinks Putin intends to do next.

Nevzlin said in an interview published by The Times of Israel on Saturday that Putin was likely first looking to annex Ukraine, Moldova, and Belarus but speculated that "everything has changed."

"Putin is trying to destroy Ukraine. We understand it from this unbearable violence and the horrific nature of this war," Nevzlin said, per the outlet.

"He destroys Russian-speaking cities, he destroys human beings. This is his way to take revenge — against Ukraine and against Zelenskyy," Nevzlin told The Times, referring to Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Per the outlet, Nevzlin also posited that Putin's wartime tactics mirror how Adolf Hitler fought during World War II.

"Did you see the field in Donbas that was sown with bombs and explosives? That's his vision for Ukraine," Nevzlin told The Times, referring to deadly litters of unexploded bombs and mines that remain embedded in combat zones.

Per the outlet, he added that the war, which began on 24 February, would likely "go on for a long time."

Nevzlin is a part of a vocal group of Russian elites who have broken with Putin to protest the war in Ukraine.

In March, he called Putin a "psychopath." In this weekend's interview, Nevzlin said the Russian president was "not a state leader but a leader of a mafia with a vengeful and cowardly personality."

Other oligarchs have also hit out at Putin in recent months.

In June, Mikhail Khodorkovsky — a Russian oligarch who was once Russia's richest man — told the Financial Times that he thought Putin had stepped onto a path in Ukraine that would "eventually" lead to regime change in Russia.

"Had it not been for so many casualties, I would have said that I'm actually quite happy because he has embarked on a route that is going to lead to his demise," said Khodorkovsky, per the outlet.

Russia Preparing To Attack Southern Ukraine, Kyiv Says, As U.S. Announces More Military Aid

Tens of thousands of Russian troops were preparing to advance on the cities of Kryviy Rih and Mykolayiv in southern Ukraine, presidential adviser Oleksiy Arestovych has said, as Moscow pounded the Dnipropetrovsk region with rocket fire and the United States announced a fresh batch of armaments and munitions for Kyiv.

Arestovych estimated that the Russian attack force numbered about 22,000 soldiers and said that a "sufficiently large" Ukrainian contingent lays in wait.

The head of the Dnipropetrovsk region's military administration, Valentyn Reznichenko, reported that Russian troops fired rocket launchers and artillery at the Synelnykove and Kriviy Rih districts of the Dnipropetrovsk region.

"The enemy hit [Synelnykove] with an anti-aircraft missile. In Pokrovska hromada, there is destruction of housing, damaged cars," he wrote on Telegram.

Powerful explosions again targeted the Black Sea port city of Mykolayiv on August 2 in the morning and one person was wounded, city Mayor Oleksandr Sienkovych said.

The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights said 5,327 civilians have been killed and 7,257 wounded in Ukraine since the start of Russia's invasion.

The United States on August 1 announced a new tranche of weapons for Ukraine, including ammunition for rocket launchers and artillery guns that Ukrainian military officials say have been critical in the fight to repel Russian troops and strike their supply lines.

The new $550 million package will "include more ammunition for the high- mobility advanced rocket systems otherwise known as HIMARS, as well as ammunition" for artillery, National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters at the White House.

This brings the total of military assistance committed to Ukraine since President Joe Biden took office to more than $8 billion, Kirby said.

HIMARS have a longer range and are more precise than the Soviet-era artillery that Ukraine had in its arsenal.

"To meet its evolving battlefield requirements, the United States will continue to work with its allies and partners to provide Ukraine with key capabilities," the Pentagon said in a statement.

he White House said U.S. officials held a call on August 1 with top Ukrainian officials to discuss the new aid package.

"The U.S. officials provided their counterparts with details of a new package that the Biden Administration will authorize today to provide Ukraine with additional ammunition for the HIMARS and artillery systems that are making a difference on the battlefield," a White House statement said.

The call came after Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin’s call with Ukrainian Minister of Defense Oleksiy Reznikov on July 29 in which he previewed upcoming security assistance plans.

Al Qaeda-leider vermoedelijk gedood met ‘vliegende messenwerper’
Gerard Driehuis - 8 uur geleden

msn

A group of Russian soldiers have accused their commanders of jailing them in eastern Ukraine for refusing to take part in the war, in a rare public exposure of tensions inside the ranks of Russia’s army over the invasion.

Maxim Grebenyuk, a lawyer who runs the Moscow-based advocacy organisation Military Ombudsman, said that at least four Russian soldiers had filed written complaints with the prosecutor general’s office, demanding punishment for the superiors who oversaw their detainment.

“We already have a list of 70 Russian soldiers who were held as prisoners. In total, about 140 soldiers were held,” added Grebenyuk, who represented the soldiers.

In one written testimony sent to Russian prosecutors on 1 August and reviewed by the Guardian, a soldier described how, after refusing to return to the battlefield, he was jailed for more than a week in different cells in the Russian-controlled separatist Luhansk People’s Republic.

Vladimir, a soldier whose name has been changed at his request, said:
"As a result of what I believe were tactical and strategic mistakes made by my commanders … and their total disregard for human life … I made the decision not to continue in the military operation."

Vladimir said he was detained on 19 July and placed in a room with window bars where he was held without food with 25 other soldiers from his unit who also refused to fight.
