Ukraine's plan could see it re-take Kherson without any fighting there
Ukrainian troops could re-take the southern city of Kherson simply by threatening to surround the 20,000 Russian troops in the region, Professor Michael Clarke, the former director-general of the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), has said.
Speaking to Sky News, the defence analyst said Ukraine's counter-offensive was going "quite quickly" and was a "big offensive", running from the southwest of Kherson to the village of Velyka Kostromka.
"My guess is what they would like to do is actually surround the 20,000 or so Russian troops who are west of the Dnipro river," he said.
"If they can threaten to surround them then the Russians will have to withdraw from Kherson and the point is if they can persuade the Russians that they have to withdraw from Kherson then they can actually do that without having to fight for it.
"They don't want to bomb the city and so they might be able to get Kherson back simply by conducting this fast offensive which threatens to surround 20,000 troops."
