India breaks with Russia in UN vote over ‘illegal’ referendums in Ukraine

India has voted against a proposal by long-time ally Russia for a secret ballot at the UN General Assembly on a resolution to denounce its annexation of four regions of Ukraine.

Moscow put forward the request for a vote on the bill brought to the 193-member General Assembly on Monday by Albania to denounce Russia's "illegal so-called referendums" and "attempted illegal annexation" of the Ukrainian regions of Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk and Zaporizhzhia.

But India joined 107 countries in voting for an open, recorded ballot, with just 13 nations backing Moscow. Thirty-nine countries abstained, and the rest — including China and Russia — did not vote.

Although Security Council votes are binding, permanent members have a veto. While votes at the General Assembly are non-binding, there is no way for Russia to block the ballot.

Once the motion to hold a recorded vote was adopted, Russia appealed against the ruling of the president of the General Assembly and sought reconsideration of the decision.

Russia’s Permanent Representative Vassily Nebenzia called the vote an “outrageous fraud” and “unprecedented manipulation, undermining the authority of the General Assembly and the United Nations as a whole”.

“Of course, in such circumstances, we opted to not take part in the vote,” he said.

Forbes Ukraine: Russia spent at least $400 million attacking Ukrainian cities on Monday

The wide-scale missile attack on cities throughout Ukraine on Monday cost the Russian government between $400 million and $700 million, according to an estimate from Forbes Ukraine.

On October 10 alone, Russia launched 84 cruise missiles and deployed 24 drones, the outlet reported, citing official sources. The broad range of the estimate is due to the fact that the number of each specific type of missile Russia used is unknown. According to available data, however, Russia’s military fired Kh-101 missiles ($13 million each), Kalibr missiles ($6.5 million each), Iskander missiles ($3 million each), Onyx missiles ($1.25 million each), Kh-22 missiles ($1 million each), and Tochka-U missiles ($300,000 each). The drones Russia used on Monday cost several million dollars total.

Ukrainian officials, tech companies to send more drones to the front line

LVIV, Ukraine -- Ukrainian and foreign tech companies are providing an array of tech and cyber support to Ukraine in its fight against Russia, Ukrainian officials and tech experts said, with some the country’s top commanders saying they plan to buy about 1,000 more drones.

“Ukraine needs all the categories of drones: huge ones, small ones, kamikaze drones,” Ivan Tolchynskyi, CEO of Atlas Aerospace, a compact drone manufacturer, said at a conference in Lviv this month.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Digital Transformation along with the General Staff said this month that they’d spend almost $500,000 to buy about 1,000 drones.

Small drones have become popular in Ukraine “because every soldier probably wants to get their own drone on the battlefield,” Tolchynskyi added. His company has provided the Ukrainian army with about 150 drones and plans to increase the number of deliveries to “1000 by the end of this year.”

Ukraine's cause is also boosted by non-combat drones and special equipment, such as the mine-detection technology and medical drones supplied to various NGOs by the Canadian company Draganfly.

“We originally came to Ukraine with our medical response drone that carries about 30 pounds of temperature sensitive supplies - such as insulin or pharmaceuticals - for search and rescue battlefield missions,” Cameron Chell, president and CEO of Draganfly, said.

While drones help defend Ukraine's skies and territory, the country also needs solid protection in cyberspace to repel attacks by Russian hackers.

“On average, we register around 200 attacks every day. Sometimes it is 500 a day and sometimes it is 50, but it happens every day,” Oleksandr Bornyakov, Deputy Minister of Digital Transformation, said.

Japanese carmaker Nissan says it is pulling out of Russia

Nissan began making SUVs in St Petersburg in 2009 but suspended manufacturing in Russia in March after the invasion of Ukraine.

Japanese carmaker Nissan has said it plans to sell its Russian operations to its local partner and withdraw from manufacturing there.

Lavrov: Rusland staat open voor gesprek met VS

Het Kremlin staat open voor gesprekken met de Verenigde Staten over de oorlog in Oekraïne. Dat zei de Russische minister van Buitenlandse Zaken, Sergej Lavrov, op de Russische staatstelevisie. Lavrov reageerde op beweringen van regeringsfunctionarissen in Washington, die stelden dat Rusland weigert plaats te nemen aan de onderhandelingstafel.

‘Dat is een leugen’, zei Lavrov. ‘We hebben geen serieuze voorstellen ontvangen om contact te leggen.’ Hij vertelde niet of Rusland zelf een voorstel heeft gedaan.

Lavrov wilde ook een ontmoeting tussen de Amerikaanse president Joe Biden en zijn Russische evenknie Vladimir Poetin op de aankomende G20-top niet uitsluiten. ‘We hebben herhaaldelijk gezegd dat we ontmoetingen nooit weigeren. Als er een voorstel is, dan zullen we dat in overweging nemen.’

En wat voor een voorstel zou u dan in overweging kunnen nemen , mijnheer Lavrov ? En toen werd het stil aan de andere kant van de lijn ...

Angela Merkel had oorlog in Oekraïne kunnen voorkomen, zegt Viktor Orban

De Hongaarse premier Viktor Orban heeft dinsdag lof betuigd aan de voormalige Duitse bondskanselier Angela Merkel. Volgens Orban had Merkel de oorlog tussen Rusland en Oekraïne kunnen voorkomen als zij nog in functie was geweest. Orban deed de uitspraken op een evenement in Berlijn. Daar verwees hij naar de politieke inmengingen van de toenmalige Duitse bondskanselier Merkel toen Rusland in 2014 de Krim annexeerden en waarbij ze een oorlog vermeed. "Wat Angela Merkel toen deed, was een meesterwerk", aldus Orban.

Volgens de Hongaarse premier is de Amerikaanse president Joe Biden overigens niet de juiste persoon om de oorlog tussen Oekraïne en Rusland te helpen beëindigen. Biden zou volgens Orban te veel kritiek uiten aan het adres van de Russische president Vladimir Poetin. "Het kan hard klinken, maar onze enige hoop op vrede luistert naar de naam Donald Trump", klonk het.
Orban had afgelopen zondag een ontmoeting met Merkel. Het is niet duidelijk waarover de gesprekken gingen.

Nieuwe Russische aanvallen op energie-installaties in de regio Dnipro, in het centrum van Oekraïne, hebben "ernstige vernielingen" aangericht.
