Russian state media: Russian proxy official injured in explosion

Igor Kornet, the so-called "acting interior minister" of Russia's proxies in Luhansk Oblast, was injured in an explosion, according to Russian state-controlled media.

The explosion is claimed to have happened at a barbershop in the center of occupied Luhansk. Five people were allegedly injured by the explosion, with three of them "in serious condition."

The extent of Kornet's injuries was not specified.

The head of Russia's proxies in Luhansk Oblast claimed the explosion was an act of "sabotage."

Russian state media reported an explosion on the outskirts of occupied Luhansk on May 13, which allegedly occurred at a former Interior Ministry base where Russian soldiers have been stationed since 2015.

Two explosions were also reported in occupied Luhansk on May 12, with Russian proxies claiming that Ukrainian troops shelled a factory.

There have been multiple reports since the start of the full-scale invasion about fires and other acts of sabotage within Russia and the Ukrainian territories occupied by Moscow.

Ukrainian forces have retaken more than 10 Russian-held positions on the northern and southern outskirts of Bakhmut, Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar said on May 14.

In a Telegram post, Maliar said that Ukrainian forces on May 14 also liberated a considerable amount of area in a forest near Ivanivske, a village southwest of Bakhmut, and captured an undisclosed number of Russian soldiers from various units.

The report of Ukrainian progress near Bakhmut comes a few days after Ukrainian authorities confirmed advancing up to two kilometers near Bakhmut. Eastern Operational Command spokesman Serhiy Cherevatyi said Russian forces were already showing signs of exhaustion on the battlefield.

Recent failures around Bakhmut are likely connected with the escalating feud between the Russian defense ministry and Yevgeny Prigozhin, head of the Wagner mercenary group which has led the assault on Bakhmut for months.

While Wagner leads the attacks inside the city, which have themselves stalled, the flanks where Ukrainian forces have advanced are manned by regular army units.

The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed a renewed wave of Ukrainian counterattacks on May 14 and admitted that two colonels – including a brigade commander – were recently killed in the Battle of Bakhmut.

In its daily briefing, the Russian Defense Ministry said that Ukrainian forces were launching "mass attempts" over the past few days to make a breakthrough north and south of Bakhmut. It claimed that it repelled all the attacks.

While Russian forces have taken around 90% of the city's urban area, Ukrainian forces are holding onto an area comprised of high-rise apartment buildings in the city's west.

Piloot van jachtbommenwerper zegt dat het Russische Ministerie van Defensie nog steeds zwijgt over de 5 vliegtuigen en heli's die zaterdag zijn neergehaald; suggereert dat het gemakkelijk de storing van het Friend and Foe-systeem kan zijn, aangezien weinig of geen Oekraïense systemen 5 voertuigen in 2 minuten kunnen uitschakelen.

Zegt dat de situatie in ieder geval slecht is, aangezien niemand de verantwoordelijkheid zal nemen en niemand zal worden gestraft omdat er "geen oorlog" is.

De Russen gebruiken zeer sterke zenders (jammers) om GPS-signalen te verstoren, die de HIMARs nodig hebben, maar het lijkt me logisch dat deze sterke zenders ook de Friend-or-Foe identificatie kunnen verstoren.

GPS Jamming is the process of using an RF transmitting device to intentionally block or interfere with GPS signals that are used for positioning, navigation and timing. These RF transmitting devices are called GPS jammers and are relatively small and simple transmitting devices that emit RF signals of the same frequency as GPS signals. These foreignly emitted signals can interfere with GPS signals and cause disruptions in reception leading to inability or inaccuracy in GPS receivers when calculating position and time.

The Global Positioning System (GPS) uses a series of earth-orbiting satellites that send out radio signals. The signals have to travel a long way to reach GPS receivers and hence become very weak by the time they reach the earth’s surface. A GPS receiver needs GPS signals from 3 different GPS satellites to calculate its position accurately. GPS signals are radio signals that use a specific frequency. GPS uses two major frequency bands - 1575.42 MHz for public and non-military use and 1227.6 MHz for the US military. Since GPS receivers receive weak radio waves from the satellites, they can be easily be jammed or distorted by using stronger RF signals which mimic the signals received from the satellite by using a GPS jammer.

GPS jammers were initially created by the government, for military organizations and spy agencies. They used them for confusing the enemy on the exact locations of military vehicles or where the GPS-guided missiles or bombs will fall. Jammers acted as a cloak giving the military privacy, increased safety, and an overall advantage in high-risk situations.

Eventually, civilian GPS jammers also became available as RF transmitter technology became smaller and cheaper to produce. They were produced for consumers that wished to ensure their privacy or prevent tracking of their locations and usually worked even up to 10 meters. However, without proper technical knowledge or when placed into the wrong hands, these GPS jammers can cause potentially damaging disruptions in communications. Criminals could use these easily available civilian GPS jammers to conceal their locations or even the locations of items they have stolen like vehicles, mobiles etc. These civilian jammers could even potentially disrupt other forms of RF signals even when used with good intentions like cellular, radars etc. They could disrupt business-critical GPS applications operations and data like fleet management, asset tracking etc. or even disrupt communications involving airport radio towers or airplanes which may lead to major disasters. Due to these evidently high-risk scenarios involving GPS jammers, they have been banned from being produced, sold or bought in many major countries like USA, UK etc.

What is GPS Anti-Jamming?

GPS anti-jamming is the process of protecting GPS receivers from interference and intentional jamming. This is done using GPS Anti-jamming devices that can detect the interference signals and even the direction they are coming from and deploy counter-measures to nullify those signals. GPS anti-jamming is particularly used by military forces to protect their devices from enemy jammers. Lately, some civilian GPS modules also have a certain degree of anti-jamming capabilities built-in to protect them against jammers.
