Australia's Queensland government has allocated funding to support the CopperString 2032 project, a 1,100km transmission line that will connect mining areas in the northwest of the state to the national electricity grid.
The budget includes a A$1bn ($670mn) down payment from coal royalties, with A$594mn earmarked for the start of construction in the coming year. The first contract for the project's initial works has already been awarded.
"CopperString 2032 will be connected to the Queensland SuperGrid, the nation's largest energy grid, meaning that wherever energy is generated we can capture it, send it, store it and use it wherever it is needed", said Queensland's minister for energy, renewables and hydrogen, Mick de Brenni.
The SuperGrid aims to bring all elements of Queensland's electricity system together to deliver 50pc renewable energy by 2030, 70pc by 2032 and 80pc by 2035, as part of the state's wider renewable targets.
State-owned utility Energy Queensland will trial vanadium battery technology to aid the state in meeting its renewable energy commitments, it was announced on 22 June at the opening of Australian mining and battery developer Vecco Group's Townsville vanadium battery manufacturing facility. The facility, which received support from the Queensland Jobs Fund, will produce the electrolyte required for vanadium batteries. Vanadium batteries are emerging as a critical technology for supporting the global transition to renewable energy.
Vanadium battery technology offers advantages over lithium-ion batteries, including longer lifespan, higher charging and discharging cycles, full discharge and charge capabilities without battery damage and minimal capacity degradation over time. These batteries can last up to 20 years, with the vanadium component 100pc reusable.
Energy Queensland has entered into a partnership with Vecco and Japanese cable manufacturer Sumitomo Electric to trial a vanadium battery in southeast Queensland. The tie-up aims to assess the benefits and technical considerations of integrating more vanadium batteries into the electricity network.
The Queensland government is focused on maximising local manufacturing and supply chains to create jobs and support the development of the Queensland SuperGrid. The project is expected to generate around 36,000 local jobs in industries associated with the SuperGrid. The government also aims to leverage its Buy Queensland purchasing policy to bring component manufacturing for the SuperGrid to regional Queensland.
The construction of CopperString 2032 is expected to create around 800 jobs during the project's construction phase. Once completed, the transmission line will increase opportunities for connecting high-quality renewable resources to the region's industries. The project is to start construction in 2024, with completion targeted for 2029.
Queensland premier Annastacia Palaszczuk emphasised the importance of local mining, processing and manufacturing. "I want to see vanadium mined in Queensland, processed in Queensland and made into vanadium batteries here in Queensland."
