Copyright: Anna Rauchenberger Yesterday TomTom announced an agreement with A1 Telekom Austria to bring HD Traffic, its real-time traffic system, to Austria.
TomTom leverages the 5.1 million mobile customers from A1 Telekom Austria in using anonymised signal data from the mobile network as traffic probes. This data is then merged together with other sources to provide traffic updates every 2 minutes. TomTom connected PNDs sold in Austria will also be fitted with A1 SIM cards and these devices will bring additional probes to improve the accuracy of the traffic information.
A1 Telekom Austria's Chief Commercial Officer Alexander Sperl said: "Machine-to-machine solutions are on the rise. Devices and applications that communicate via SIM cards with one another - as in electric meters, vending machines, and not least in motor vehicles - are becoming more and more diverse and have developed into a key growth driver."
"With at least 60,000 SIM cards, TomTom is the largest customer of A1 - measured by the number of SIMs. We are recognized in Austria as the best network and together with TomTom we offer the best traffic information in the country, helping customers with reliable information to better plan their day."
TomTom now has HD Traffic established in 15 countries across Western Europe: Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Finland, France, United Kingdom, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Austria, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland and Spain.
