Air Products & VPI to Produce Hydrogen at H3 in Humber

Leading hydrogen producer & power generator Air Products and VPI have signed joint development agreement to drive forward the Humber Hydrogen Hub, H3, which seeks to develop a flagship 800MW low carbon hydrogen production facility in Immingham, UK. The majority of hydrogen produced would be used to decarbonize VPI Immingham’s existing power production. As the UK’s largest industrial cluster, the Humber has the highest levels of industrial carbon dioxide emissions. H3 would produce low-carbon hydrogen at large scale, combining market-leading hydrogen production, carbon capture technology and offshore CO2 storage currently under development for the Humber region.

The majority of the low-carbon hydrogen would serve as a substitute fuel for VPI’s existing third gas turbine power train. Additional low-carbon hydrogen would also be made available to other industrial users. Combined with deployment of post-combustion capture technology on trains 1 and 2 at VPI Immingham as part of the Humber Zero project, H3 would bring substantial decarbonization to the VPI combined heat and power facilities, saving over two-thirds of the emissions from its Immingham industrial site.

The H3 project looks to capture up to two million tonnes of CO2per annum and contribute to achieving Net Zero in the wider Humber industrial region by 2040.

The H3 project has submitted an application for Strand 1 funding as part of the Net Zero Hydrogen Fund. Administered by UK Research and Innovation, the fund has the objective of enhancing hydrogen production at scale. It will contribute towards the UK Government’s ambition of realizing 10GW of low-carbon hydrogen production by 2030. As both companies move towards an investment decision, this marks a significant step that could bring hundreds of new jobs to the region during construction and operation.

VPI is a UK-based power company, providing energy to the National Grid. VPI is committed to investing more than GBP 2 billion on supporting energy transition over the next five years. VPI Immingham is a Combined Heat and Power plant near Immingham, on the south bank of the Humber estuary in the UK. It is one of the largest CHP plants in Europe, capable of generating 1.2GW and up to 930 tonnes of steam per hour, which is used by neighboring refineries to produce a range of essential products.

Vattenfall Aims to Build Offshore Hydrogen Cluster in Netherlands

European renewable giant Vattenfall said that if it wins the tender for its lot at Hollandse Kust West, the company will build the world’s first hydrogen cluster as part of an offshore wind farm there. Three wind turbines will be equipped with electrolysers. The hydrogen they produce will be transported via a pipeline to the Port of Rotterdam and fed into the hydrogen network there. The hydrogen will then be transported to users via a network of pipes, in the same way as with natural gas.

In the hydrogen cluster, which consists of three turbines, containers are placed on special platforms. These containers are filled with electrolyser modules, transformers and batteries. When working in tandem, these containers make it possible to convert the generated electricity in the wind turbines into hydrogen. The planned total capacity for the cluster is 45 MW.

There are various plans for onshore hydrogen plants, but comparatively few for offshore production. In addition, it will ease pressure on the overloaded onshore electricity grids. Hydrogen will become an important part of the energy mix as part of a fossil-free energy supply. This is essential for the ongoing transition to a sustainable energy supply and increasing electrification.

Earlier this year, Vattenfall received subsidies from the Scottish government to develop the world’s first hydrogen turbine off the coast of Aberdeen. Vattenfall wants to use Hollandse Kust West as a springboard for taking the next step and connecting multiple hydrogen turbines.

Several new wind farms will be built off the coast of the Netherlands in the coming years. The next one scheduled for construction is Hollandse Kust West. The project consists of two parts, lot VI and lot VII, with lot VII primarily being assessed for system integration, i.e. plans to align the energy system of the future as closely as possible. Vattenfall is competing in both lots. The winner of the construction contract will be announced after the summer.

Hydrogen Valley in Estonia Vision to Start in 6 Years

In times of widespread energy crisis, the urgency for energy independence and need to green the energy system is felt across Estonia. Anticipating the implementation of European Green Deal legislation, many organisations and cities have committed to become climate neutral to future proof their business. Therefore, the first nationwide Hydrogen Valley ever is now being developed in close cooperation between three regions, one university and five of the largest companies in energy and industry in Estonia. In short, in the coming six years Hydrogen Valley Estonia aims to become a complete and full nationwide hydrogen value chain that will accelerate the energy transition and independency of the whole country under the motto from zero to green.

A coalition of public and private partners has formed the Management Team, Steering Group, and a Support Group for Hydrogen Valley Estonia. Founding partners include Port of Tallinn, Tallinn Airport, Alexela, Eesti Energia, Terminal, Tartu University, Municipality of Tartu, Municipality of Pärnu, and the Island of Saarema. These nine partners are included into Management Team and Steering Group and responsible for building the hydrogen strategy, governance, and international recognition for Estonia to become part of a European Large-Scale Hydrogen Valley along the North Sea Baltic corridor, amongst others the Netherlands, Germany, and Denmark. This will foster economic opportunities for international collaboration, hydrogen export, and EU subsidy schemes.

The Support Group is consisting of the following organizations: XFly; Skeleton Technologies; Stargate Hydrogen; Aviation Academy, Tallinn University of Technology; TS Laevad; Liwathon; Elmo Rent, HHLA TK; Estiko; Keila Municipality; Pölva Rural Municipality; SKYCORP, Tartu County and Lääne-Harju Rural Municipality. The members of the Support Group are invited to bring projects into the Valley scope to further complete the hydrogen value chain in Estonia. Additional partners are welcome to discuss becoming part of Hydrogen Valley Estonia to take part in the core of the developing hydrogen economy.

As a result of our preliminary scoping of the Valley, Hydrogen Valley has identified thirty projects to be included into the scope. Almost every single project is initiated by one of the partners in the Steering Group They range from generation of renewable energy to use cases, across the country. By far most of the projects are in the idea and feasibility phase. The schemes below summarize the preliminary findings to date. Hydrogen Valley is working on getting the scope of the Valley complete by July 2022 and present a comprehensive overview in the yearly development as well.

Parallel to that, transport and storage infrastructure is developed, including import and export terminal infrastructure, fuelling stations and storage facilities. This will lay the fundament for the hydrogen backbone to be developed afterwards. Hydrogen use cases under development range from fuelling public transport, heavy duty vehicles, rail, shipping, aviation, and other transport modalities to feedstock for industry, net balancing and even heating cases in the built environment. Finally, a range of innovation-, research- and development projects are included.In the coming six years, green hydrogen production will be developed in at least six regions in the country. Parallel to that, transport and storage infrastructure is developed, including import and export terminal infrastructure, fuelling stations and storage facilities.

The hydrogen produced in Estonia will be used for hydrogen fuelling public transport, heavy duty vehicles, rail, shipping, aviation, and other transport modalities. Furthermore, it will be used as feedstock for industry, net balancing and even heating cases in the built environment. Finally, a range of innovation-, research- and development projects are included. At this moment the scope of Hydrogen Valley Estonia includes around 30 projects under development, but more parties and projects are welcome to join.

Shell to Start Building 200 MW Holland Hydrogen I

Shell Nederland & Shell Overseas Investments have taken the final investment decision to build Holland Hydrogen I, which will be Europe’s largest renewable hydrogen plant once operational in 2025. The 200MW electrolyser will be constructed on the Tweede Maasvlakte in the port of Rotterdam and will produce up to 60,000 kilograms of renewable hydrogen per day. The renewable power for the electrolyser will come from the offshore wind farm Hollandse Kust (noord), which is partly owned by Shell.

The renewable hydrogen produced will supply the Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Rotterdam, by way of the HyTransPort pipeline1, where it will replace some of the grey hydrogen usage in the refinery. This will partially decarbonise the facility’s production of energy products like petrol and diesel and jet fuel. As heavy-duty trucks are coming to market and refuelling networks grow, renewable hydrogen supply can also be directed toward these to help in decarbonising commercial road transport.

Shell’s ambition is to help build a global hydrogen economy by developing opportunities in the production, storage, transport, and delivery of hydrogen to end customers. Holland Hydrogen I’s approval marks an important milestone on that journey not only for the Netherlands, as a leader in the hydrogen economy, but also for Shell globally.

Shell owns and operates around 10% of the global capacity of installed hydrogen electrolysers, including a 20 MW electrolyser in China and a 10 MW proton exchange membrane electrolyser in Germany. They can produce, respectively, 3,000 tonnes and 1,300 tonnes of hydrogen a year.

Lastige businesscase

Toch waarschuwt Gigler voor een 'onzeker' traject. 'Er zijn nog allerlei hobbels die te maken hebben met beleid, vergunningen en met bestellingen die lange levertijden hebben.'

Een van de obstakels is het verdienmodel van groene waterstof. Niemand weet nog precies hoe kosten en prijzen zich gaan ontwikkelen en het is daardoor lastig om een businesscase te maken en financiers te vinden. Veel hangt af van de beschikbare groene stroom voor de elektrolyse en de prijs daarvan, de kosten in de rest van de waterstofketen, en subsidies.
Embryonale industrie

Een andere grote bottleneck is de productiecapaciteit van de elektrolysers zelf. ‘Die productie moet nog op gang komen', zegt Richard van de Sanden, wetenschappelijk directeur van het instituut EIRES voor duurzame energie aan de TU in Eindhoven. 'Er is ontzettend veel vraag de komende jaren, maar de productiecapaciteit is er nog niet. Het is nog een embryonale industrie. Wereldwijd staat er nu nog maar 500 megawatt aan elektrolysecapaciteit voor groene waterstof.'

Tegelijk is dat een grote kans voor Nederland, denkt hij. 'In hoeverre is de Europese maakindustrie in staat om de productiecapaciteit te vergroten? Er ligt een gigantische kans voor de Nederlandse industrie. Het verdienvermogen zal vooral rondom de maakindustrie gaan liggen. Van de Sanden hoopt dat er uiteindelijk een grote Nederlandse speler ontstaat die — à la ASML — elektrolysers kan ontwikkelen en maken.

Haven Amsterdam zet in op vergroening: bouw grote waterstoffabriek in steigers

AMSTERDAM (ANP) - In het havengebied van Amsterdam verrijst over een paar jaar mogelijk de grootste groene waterstoffabriek van Europa.

Initiatiefnemer HyCC wil in samenwerking met het havenbedrijf een fabriek met een capaciteit van 500 megawatt realiseren, waarmee een „grote stap” wordt gezet in de ontwikkeling van de waterstofeconomie in het Noordzeekanaalgebied. Een eerste haalbaarheidsstudie is afgerond. Het project wordt de komende maanden verder uitgewerkt, waarbij onder andere een geschikte locatie wordt gezocht.

Groene waterstof wordt gezien als een alternatief voor fossiele brandstoffen zoals aardgas. Behalve met het verlagen van de uitstoot kan waterstof ook helpen bij het tegengaan van de afhankelijkheid van Russische fossiele brandstoffen.

Tweede Maasvlakte
Shell kondigde eerder plannen aan voor een waterstoffabriek van 200 megawatt op Tweede Maasvlakte in Rotterdam. Onlangs werd nog bekend dat het kabinet 750 miljoen euro beschikbaar stelt voor de ontwikkeling van een transportnetwerk voor duurzaam geproduceerde waterstof. Nederland hoopt een spilfunctie te gaan vervullen op de internationale markt voor groene waterstof.

Er is niet eens genoeg stroom voor elektrische auto's, warmtepompen en voor bedrijven, dus al die groene waterstofprojecten vallen in het water.

Bouw eerst maar eens een paar kerncentrales, want anders gaat alles mislukken.

ELEMANTA H2 Hydrogen Barge to Green Rouen Port’s Rubis Terminal

Améthyste, ArianeGroup, Cetim, HDF Energy, Rubis Terminal and Sofresid engineering have teamed up to develop the multi-service power barge ELEMANTA H2, designed to supply electricity and hydrogen to large ships, reducing their polluting emissions by more than 80% during port calls.They have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to deploy mobile solutions providing, from green or low-carbon hydrogen, cold ironing services in addition to the electrical grid, for container ships, cruise ships or tankers. ELEMANTA H2 will also enable hydrogen bunkering to meet the refueling needs of future hydrogen powered ships. This collaboration of French experts aims to valorize skills and know how in various fields, from naval architecture to hydrogen technologies, from the management of port infrastructures to the development of industrial asset integrity management software.

Maritime transport accounted for 13.5% of total EU greenhouse gas emissions in 2018. Almost 77% of European external trade and 35% of EU internal trade is carried out by sea or river. In order to reach the European Commission's target of a 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, the maritime and inland waterway transport sector must accelerate its energy transition. ELEMANTA H2 aims to contribute to the decarbonization of port activities.

The partners have identified the River Port of Rouen and more specifically the Rubis Terminal as a pioneer site, as it is strategically located between the Grand Port Maritime du Havre and the ports of Paris. With the support of Normandie Energies and the port operator HAROPA, a demonstration barge will integrate a multi-MW hydrogen fuel cell system manufactured in France, by HDF Energy. In addition, a high-pressure green hydrogen storage system will cover the need for autonomy during port calls. Sofresid Engineering will carry out the architecture and the integration of the equipment of the barge, which will be mobile to move as close as possible to the need and maximize its utilization rate. A risk analysis based on innovative tools will be covered by Améthyste. Finally, Cetim will take in charge the quantification of the environmental gains brought by this zero-emission power-barge solution.

The ELEMANTA H2 demonstrator offers a low-carbon alternative to diesel generators that currently power these ships at berth, reducing CO2 emissions by more than 85% and all nitrogen oxide and sulfur dioxide emissions during port calls. The power barge will be commissioned in 2025 for a 20-year operating period. The ELEMANTA H2 Rouen project, approved in April 2022 by the Pôle Mer Bretagne Atlantique, has been selected by the call for expression of interest Corimer 2022 launched by BPI France.

AMSTERDAM - De Nederlandse luchtvaartindustrie heeft de handen ineen geslagen om in 2028 de commerciële vlucht van het eerste waterstofvliegtuig tussen Rotterdam en Londen mogelijk te maken. Een zeventiental Nederlandse bedrijven en instituten zoals het NLR en TU Delft werkt aan een systeem, dat indien succesvol, ook gebruikt gaat worden door de grote vliegtuigbouwers Airbus en Embraer.

De luchtvaartindustrie is op verschillende sporen bezig als het gaat om verduurzaming. De bedrijven die samen werken aan HAPSS, een afkorting van hydrogen aviation powertrain and storage system, zetten in op waterstof, zo legt Michel van Ierland (45) namens HAPSS uit. De ondernemer verwacht veel van het project, waarbij meer dan duizend vliegtuigen kunnen worden omgebouwd. Onlangs kreeg het ombouwproject een toekenning vanuit het zogeheten Groeifonds. Om hoeveel geld dit gaat is nog niet bekend.

Waarin onderscheidt dit initiatief zich van andere?

„Door het ombouwen van een bestaand vliegtuig kunnen we relatief snel de lucht in. Als dit lukt, dan kunnen we opschalen naar een hoger vermogen en ons kwalificeren als toeleverancier voor fabrikanten als Embraer en Airbus. Daarmee hopen we het ’groene’ verdienvermogen voor de Nederlandse luchtvaarttoeleveranciers veilig te stellen voor de toekomst.”

Airbus en Embraer werken zelf ook aan prototypes. Maakt dit de inspanning van de Nederlandse partijen niet overbodig?

„De ontwikkeling van een geheel nieuw vliegtuig vergt jaren, zo mikt Airbus op 2035. Met fabrikant Embraer is bovendien afgesproken dat zij met ons in zee zullen gaan als ons project oplevert wat we denken. Zij werken ook aan een waterstofvliegtuig en besteden een deel van de ontwikkeling van het voortstuwingssysteem aan HAPSS uit.”

Hoe werkt dit dan straks?

„Omdat waterstof meer ruimte inneemt dat kerosine, moeten er een paar stoelrijen uit het vliegtuig, waar de tanks moeten komen. Er kan iets minder ver gevlogen worden, zo’n 750 kilometer maximaal. Maar dit is voldoende voor bijna 90% van het bestaande routenetwerk van luchtvaartmaatschappijen. Voor de luchtvaartmaatschappijen is dat een uitkomst, want die hoeven hun netwerk minder aan te passen.”

Duizend vliegtuigen is mondiaal een druppel op de gloeiende plaat.

„Het kost een paar jaar om dit aantal om te bouwen bij Fokker in Woensdrecht. Maar als je die stap niet zet, dan kun je ook geen rol spelen in de nieuwe generatie vliegtuigen die eraan komt bij de grote vliegtuigfabrikanten. Wij werken nu aan deze innovatie. Als het lukt, dan kunnen we snel opschalen. We werken ook samen met Airbus vanuit Nederland en die zouden dan ons systeem kunnen gebruiken voor hun vliegtuigen. Er is al interesse van luchtvaartmaatschappijen in HAPSS.”

Wat gaat er dan met de bestaande 25.000 grotere vliegtuigen op fossiele brandstof gebeuren?

„Die zullen bijvoorbeeld op alternatieve brandstof moeten vliegen om te vergroenen. Ons systeem is aanvullend daarop in de energietransitie van de luchtvaart. De kleinste vliegtuigen kunnen op batterijen vliegen. Voor grotere vliegtuigen is dat geen optie, omdat die te zwaar worden.”

De toekomst ligt bij kleinere vliegtuigen?

„Op de kortere afstanden verwacht ik dat wel. Het is een kans voor kleinere luchthavens, zoals Maastricht, Eindhoven en Rotterdam die dan ook meer gebruikt kunnen worden. De herrie is ook minder van onze omgebouwde toestellen, want bijvoorbeeld de aanwezige elektromotor maakt geen geluid.”

Is wat jullie doen het ei van Columbus voor de vergroening van de luchtvaart?

„Niets doen is geen optie. Er komt allerlei wetgeving aan, waardoor er iets moet gebeuren. Wij denken dat we met deze techniek echt een stap vooruit kunnen zetten. We spiegelen ons aan een bedrijf als chipmachinefabrikant ASML dat ook bedrijven in de toeleveringsketen heeft geïntegreerd. Dat hopen wij ook te bereiken voor de waterstofaandrijving. We richten ons dus niet op het hele vliegtuig, maar puur op de manier van aandrijven. Wij gebruiken een waterstofcel om de waterstof om te zetten in elektriciteit. De elektriciteit gaat de elektromotor vervolgens aandrijven en er blijft uiteindelijk water over.”

Hoe duur is een ticket voor het waterstofvliegtuig?

„Een ticket wordt ongeveer 10% duurder te opzichte van nu. Allereerst kost waterstof meer, hoewel de onderhoudskosten lager zijn aan de HAPSS-motor. En er gaan minder stoelen in een vliegtuig vanwege de tanks, waardoor je minder omzet hebt. Als vliegen echt emissieloos is, willen consumenten er wel voor betalen zo blijkt. Dat is verrassend, want in de praktijk gebeurt dat nu nauwelijks.”

Is er wel voldoende waterstof?
Er wordt veel gepraat over allerlei toepassingen van groene waterstof. Zo kondigde Shell onlangs aan een nieuwe fabriek te willen bouwen in Rotterdam. Maar is er genoeg waterstof voor alle sectoren die vergroend moeten worden? Volgens Michel van Ierland is het positieve dat waterstof opgeslagen kan worden als er veel windenergie wordt opgewekt als het hard waait. Hij maakt zich geen zorgen over de toeleveringsketen in Nederland, maar er moet natuurlijk ook waterstof zijn in het land waar het vliegtuig heen vliegt. Maar draaien straks onze wasmachines, fabrieken of vliegtuigen op waterstof? „Er gebeurt veel in de wereld als het gaat om duurzame energie. Niet alleen in Nederland. Ook een partij als de Saoedische energiegigant Aramco zegt groot te zullen inzetten op zonneparken in de woestijn. Inmiddels ben ik al door zes zonne-energieaanbieders benaderd met de vraag: wanneer heb je het nodig?”, aldus Van Ierland.

EU-landen subsidiëren 5,4 miljard euro voor onderzoek naar gebruik van waterstof

Vijftien EU-landen gaan voor 5,4 miljard euro investeren in onderzoek naar het produceren en inzetten van waterstof. Met het onderzoek wordt gekeken naar het maken, opslaan en distribueren van waterstof. Onder meer België en Nederland doen mee aan het project.

De Europese Commissie verwacht dat met het project efficiëntere elektrodematerialen, betere brandstofcellen en innovatieve transportsystemen worden bedacht. Het Ipcei Hy2Tech-project legt de focus op de mobiliteitsbranche en moet zo'n twintigduizend banen opleveren. De landen gaan zelf 5,4 miljard euro subsidiëren en Europa verwacht dat bedrijven en andere partijen nog eens 8,8 miljard euro investeren.

Aan het project doen 35 bedrijven mee die actief zijn in een of meerdere EU-landen. Deze bedrijven hebben 41 waterstofprojecten waar ze subsidie voor gaan of willen krijgen. Het project is een Ipcei, wat staat voor een Important Project of Common European Interest. Dit betekent dat de landen staatssteun mogen geven, in dit geval omdat innoveren in waterstof risicovol kan zijn voor één land of bedrijf en dat er daarom internationale samenwerking nodig is.

Volgens de Europese Commissie is de steun beperkt tot wat nodig en proportioneel is. In het geval dat een project zeer succesvol blijkt te zijn en winst maakt, dan betalen bedrijven een deel van de subsidie terug. De resultaten van de projecten worden daarnaast gedeeld door de deelnemende bedrijven, waardoor onderzoeksinstellingen en andere bedrijven er ook baat van kunnen hebben. Onderzoeksinstellingen en universiteiten werken ook samen met de bedrijven die subsidie krijgen.

Er zijn twee bedrijven die in België actief zijn en via het project subsidie krijgen. Cummins en John Cockerill werken beide aan projecten voor het maken van waterstof. In Nederland krijgt Nedstack subsidie voor brandstofcellen. Dit bedrijf, dat werd opgericht door AkzoNobel, wil semigeautomatiseerd brandstofcellen maken voor onder meer de maritieme sector. Jaarlijks wil het bedrijf 1GW aan brandstofcellen kunnen maken. In 2023 wil het bedrijf de productie starten, in 2026 moet dit zijn opgeschaald tot jaarlijks 1GW.

Hoeveel subsidie individuele bedrijven krijgen, maakt de Europese Commissie nog niet bekend. Mogelijk staat er vertrouwelijke informatie in de documenten, wat eerst door de Europese Commissie en lidstaten moet worden gecontroleerd. Als hier duidelijkheid over is, wordt bekend hoeveel subsidie bedrijven krijgen.

De Nederlandse overheid is van plan om 21,7 miljoen euro subsidie te verlenen aan Nedstack. Het bedrijf verwacht dat dit in de zomer definitief is. Het Nederlandse kabinet maakt daarnaast bekend 1,3 miljard euro beschikbaar te willen stellen voor nieuwe waterstofprojecten in de komende twee golven van het Ipcei. In de tweede golf gaat het over de decarbonisatie van de industrie, de derde golf gaat over import- en infrastructuur. Later komt er een vierde golf, gericht op mobiliteit en transport. De tweede golf loopt van 2023 tot en met 2026, de derde golf gaat een jaar langer door.

BOC to Build Hydrogen Station at bp Truckstop in Lytton

Linde’s gas and engineering company BOC & bp Australia have announced a new agreement to build a hydrogen refuelling station at the bp truckstop in Lytton in Queensland in Australia.It will be the first service station in Australia with hydrogen refuelling capability. The Queensland Government’s current fleet of five hydrogen-powered Hyundai NEXOs will be the first to use the new refueller to be opened later in the year.

BOC will supply and install the state-of-the-art Linde hydrogen refuelling station. It will dispense green hydrogen produced by BOC at its Bulwer Island production site, just 10 minutes from the bp Truckstop in Lytton. The green hydrogen will be produced by a 220 kW electrolyser powered by solar energy generated onsite.

The hydrogen refuelling station will have capacity to refill a hydrogen car in 3-5 minutes and will in future be made available to drivers with a bp plus card who register with bp for access to the supply of hydrogen.

HyCC Launches 500 MW Hydrogen Project in Port of Amsterdam

Hydrogen company HyCC has launched Project H2era to construct a 500 MW green hydrogen plant in the Amsterdam port area. The project, launched in cooperation with the Port of Amsterdam, is a major step forward in the development of the regional hydrogen economy to help decarbonize industry and mobility.

HyCC intends to start operations of the new plant in the Amsterdam port area in 2027. HyCC and the Port of Amsterdam have completed a first feasibility study and the project will be further developed in the coming months during the study phase pre-FEED.

H2era will produce green hydrogen and oxygen from renewable electricity and water in a process called electrolysis. Discussions are currently underway with various parties to use the hydrogen for the decarbonization of industries in the region. In addition, the hydrogen can be used for green mobility. In the future, the new plant can also be connected to a national pipeline network to enable exchange of hydrogen between industrial clusters.

HyCC is also working with Port of Amsterdam and Tata Steel on a 100 MW plant at the site of Tata Steel IJmuiden, called project H2ermes.

EU Users Sek Pragmatic Regulatory Framework for Hydrogen Market

Several hard to abate sector’s associations have welcomed the publication of the drafts for the outstanding RED II Delegated Acts on Article 27.3 and Article 28.5 and appreciated the European Commission’s call for feedback. They wrote “For meeting the climate neutrality targets set by the European Green Deal, several sectors crucially depend on the large-scale availability of renewable fuels of non-biological origin RFNBOs, supplied cost-competitively and securely across Europe. The signatories strongly support avoiding the double counting of renewable electricity or emitted greenhouse gases through appropriate certification mechanisms and the establishment of viable sustainability criteria though the RED II Delegated Acts. These shall ensure a clear and certain framework for investments. Achieving the Commission's increased ambition levels such as RFNBOs sub-quotas as outlined in the REPowerEU Plan, European Hydrogen Strategy, revision of the Renewable Energy Directive, ReFuelEU Aviation or discussed in FuelEU Maritime require a safe investment environment and sufficient planning certainty for the rapid scale-up of renewable fuels of non-biological origin, hydrogen derivatives such as synthetic fuels, and underlying technologies such as Carbon Capture and Utilisation.”

They wrote “Overly restrictive requirements, the absence of clear guarantees on the availability of renewable electricity and relevant dedicated infrastructure have the opposite effect of curtailing investments in production capacity and imposing undue administrative burdens. The signatories therefore propose the following changes to the draft acts, which are necessary to enable the market ramp-up and fast decarbonisation.”

Art. 27.3 – ‘Additionality’ Delegated Act:

1. Prolong the proposed transitional period and grandfathering to at least 2030.

2. Extend the geographical correlation beyond the proposed concept, provided there is sufficient or potential interconnection capacity between bidding zones.

3. Set at least the proposed monthly temporal correlation as a default. A change to a more granular correlation should be subject to a corresponding Impact Assessment by the Commission.

Art. 28.5 – GHG methodology/threshold for RFNBO/RCF Delegated Act:

1. Reconsider restrictions on industrial CO2 use.

2. Broaden the definition of possible CO2 sources limited by carbon pricing requirements.

3. Allow RCFs producer to use PPA’s and other measures to replace the electricity displaced by the production of an RCF and RFNBO instead of national average grid GHG factors.

bp & thyssenkrupp Steel Ink MoU for Hydrogen Supply

Global Oil & Gas giant bp and Germany’s largest steel maker thyssenkrupp Steel have signed a memorandum of understanding focused on the development of long-term supply of low carbon hydrogen and renewable power in steel production, helping accelerate the steel industry’s wider energy transition. The companies will explore supply options for both blue and green hydrogen, as well as power from wind and solar generation through the use of power purchase agreements. The companies also intend to jointly advocate for policies that will support the development of low carbon hydrogen and the growth of green steel in Europe.

Thyssenkrupp Steel accounts for 2.5% of C02 emissions in Germany, mainly at the Duisburg site where the main emitters, the blast furnaces, are operated. By replacing the coal-fired blast furnaces with direct reduction plants where iron ore is reduced with low-carbon hydrogen, Thyssenkrupp Steel intends to make steel production climate-neutral in the long term.

Steel accounts for 8 to 11% of global C02 emissions. It is essential for the automotive and construction industries and for the manufacturing of industrial machinery. It also forms the foundation for a string of Decarbonisation technologies, including wind turbines, generators and smart power grids.

Thyssenkrupp Steel currently produces 11 million tonnes of crude steel per year and is targeting the production of 400,000 tonnes of C02-reduced steel by 2025.

bp is working to pursue green hydrogen production at its refineries in Lingen in Germany, Rotterdam in the Netherlands and Castellon in Spain. It is developing both blue and green hydrogen production projects around the world, including in the UK and Australia.

Universal Hydrogen Opens Engineering Design Center in Toulouse

Toulouse France based leading the fight to decarbonize aviation sector Universal Hydrogen has inaugurated its engineering design center and European headquarters in Toulouse in France. Located in the historic Hangar B16 at Toulouse-Blagnac Airport, the event was attended by industry leaders and dignitaries. Universal Hydrogen also debuted its newly-liveried ATR 72 test aircraft used for developing the hydrogen retrofit kit and hydrogen module operational handling experiments.

Additionally, the opening event highlighted Universal Hydrogen’s liquid hydrogen modular capsule technology as well as the company’s renovation of the historic B16 hangar. The liquid hydrogen capsule development is one of the key focus areas for the Toulouse team and has exceeded key performance targets in latest full-scale prototype testing.

Hangar B16 was originally built in the 1940s and was first used as a civil hangar for aircraft maintenance before being occupied by Airbus during the development of the Guppy and the Caravelle. After the opening of today’s Toulouse-Blagnac Airport in 1953, the hangar was modified, elevated, and divided into two separate facilities in the 1960s.

Universal Hydrogen is making hydrogen-powered commercial flight a near-term reality. The company takes a flexible, scalable, and capital-light approach to hydrogen logistics by transporting it in modular capsules over the existing freight network from green production sites directly to the airplane anywhere in the world. The company is targeting regional and narrowbody/single aisle airplanes as the near-term and most impactful decarbonization opportunities. Universal Hydrogen is also working to certify a powertrain conversion kit to retrofit existing regional aircraft to fly on hydrogen.

IISc Scientists Generate Green Hydrogen from Biomass

An innovative technology to produce hydrogen from biomass has been developed by a team of researchers from the Indian Institute of Science angalore in India. The team was led by IISc Centre for Sustainable Technologies Professor S Dasappa. The process consists of two steps. In the first step, biomass is converted into syngas, a hydrogen-rich fuel gas mixture, in a novel reactor using oxygen and steam. In the second step, pure hydrogen is generated from syngas using an indigenously developed low-pressure gas separation unit.

Both these technologies, developed in Dasappa’s lab, ensure that this process is a highly efficient method of generating green hydrogen – it produces 100 g of hydrogen from 1 kg of biomass even though only 60 g of hydrogen are present in 1 kg of biomass. This is because in this process, steam, which also contains hydrogen, participates in both homogeneous and heterogeneous reactions (in homogeneous reactions, reactants are in a single phase whereas in heterogeneous reactions, the reactants are in two or more phases).

The production of green hydrogen using this process is environmentally friendly for another reason, it is carbon negative. The two carbon-based by-products are solid carbon, which serves as a carbon sink, and carbon dioxide, which can be used in other value-added products.

The project was supported by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and the Department of Science and Technology of the Government of India. The team also acknowledges the support of the Indian Oil Corporation Limited in scaling up the technology to produce 0.25 tonnes of hydrogen per day for use in hydrogen-powered fuel cell buses.

Iveco Group’s IVECO BUS will partner with HTWO to equip its future European hydrogen-powered buses with world-leading fuel cell systems. HTWO, as a fuel cell system-based hydrogen business brand of Hyundai Motor Group, was first released in December 2020 with Hyundai’s strong commitment to hydrogen economy. With its proven fuel cell technology utilized in Hyundai FCEVs, HTWO is expanding the provision of fuel cell technology to other automobile OEMs and non-automobile sectors to make hydrogen available for everything.
