EDP Project to Test Hydrogen at Central do Ribatejo
EDP intends to develop a pilot hydrogen production project with storage at the Ribatejo Combined Cycle Plant with support from the European Union. The project, once approved, is due to start in early 2020, with the demonstration and hydrogen production part of the plant to be built by 2022. With an electrolyser with an installed capacity of 1MW and 12 MWh of storage capacity, this pilot will be a reference and one of the largest projects of its kind in Portugal. This will certainly be the technology of the future for hydrogen production, allowing the use of renewables, and essential for Portugal to achieve its carbon neutral targets by 2050.
The main objective of the project is to develop new power-to-X-to-power (P2X2P) solutions integrated in CCGT combined-cycle thermal power plants and dedicated ammonia and hydrogen burning turbines. hydrogen in natural gas pipelines, a solution which will in future lead to economies of scale in the generation, transport and distribution of hydrogen.
With this project, EDP intends to gain experience in the production of hydrogen and its conversion into electricity, including also the laboratory validation of other concepts. This will allow an in-depth analysis of the hydrogen value chain by studying the most favorable applications and business models.
