European FeV prices rose above $30 per kg compared to just under $29 two days ago and around $28 a week ago. Producers are well sold under contracts and traders continue to be hard-pressed to find units.
In the US, prices for 80% FeV are close to $15 per lb, up $1 from a week ago. A consumer reportedly bought 5 mt of 50% FeV at slightly below $14 per lb, and a sale of 80% FeV was booked late last week at $14.50.
“The only problem with FeV prices moving up so quickly,” said one observer, “is that they are likely to come down just as fast.”
Earlier this week, sources dismissed the notion of China exporting vanadium to take advantage of higher prices in the West, but as European FeV prices approach domestic prices of $31 per kg in China, the prospect of China exporting is looking less unlikely. China, however, also is plagued with logistical delays, says one observer. As a result, it may be a while before Chinese vanadium shipments can have a market impact.
