LONDEN (ANP) - Akzo Nobel heeft minstens drie biedingen
ontvangen van investeringsmaatschappijen voor zijn farmatak
Organon Biosciences. Dat hebben bronnen dinsdag gezegd tegen
persbureau Reuters gezegd. Het bestuur van het chemie- en
farmacieconcern zou volgens de ingewijden dinsdag bijeenkomen om
de biedingen te bespreken.

Akzo Nobel gaf vorig jaar aan de farmadivisie te willen
verzelfstandigen en de blik volledig op verf en chemicaliën te
richten. Een gefaseerde beursgang van Organon begin dit jaar
heeft steeds de voorkeur gehad, maar verkoop is nooit door Akzo
Nobel uitgesloten.

Volgens een woordvoerder van Akzo Nobel is hier niets aan
veranderd. Hij wilde dinsdag verder niet ingaan op de
speculatie.

Diverse marktkenners zijn ervan overtuigd geraakt dat het
Arnhemse concern Organon zal verkopen als de juiste prijs wordt
geboden. De voorgenomen beursgang liep eind vorig jaar een deuk
op toen partner Pfizer zich uit de gezamenlijke ontwikkeling van
een medicijn tegen schizofrenie terugtrok. Analisten schatten
dat Organon tot ongeveer 10 miljard euro kan opleveren.

De ene groep investeerders zou bestaan uit onder meer
Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, Warburg Pincus en CVC. In een andere
groep zitten onder meer Blackstone, Bain Capital, Alpinvest,
Apax en Texas Pacific Group. Het derde bod zou door Cinven,
Carlyle en BC Partners zijn gemaakt.

Nog veel vrouwen in Afrika zonder aids-medicijnen

DEN HAAG/NEW YORK - De meeste zwangere vrouwen in Afrika krijgen nog steeds geen medicijnen die moeten voorkomen dat hiv, het virus dat aids kan veroorzaken, wordt overgedragen aan hun kinderen. Wel is de behandeling van kinderen met aids in de afgelopen jaren verbeterd.
Dat concludeert het VN-kinderfonds Unicef in een rapport dat dinsdag is gepresenteerd. Volgens de notitie is in Afrika een op de tien zwangere vrouwen met hiv besmet. In de Zuid-Afrikaanse stad Pretoria is een op de vier kinderen besmet met het virus dat aids kan veroorzaken.
Het voorkomen dat moeders met hiv het virus overdragen op hun (ongeboren) baby is van het grootste belang, stelt Unicef ,,In 2006 kregen ongeveer 530.000 kinderen hiv, meestal via hun moeders. Zonder behandeling zal de helft van de geïnfecteerde kinderen voor het derde levensjaar overlijden.''

Novartis heeft in 2006 de sterkste winstgroei behaald sinds 1997. Het Zwitserse farmaconcern boekte tevens voor het vijfde jaar op rij een tweecijferige winstgroei. In 2007 voorziet Novartis een verdere stijging van omzet en resultaat en denkt het bedrijf vier nieuwe medicijnen te kunnen introduceren.

Novartis sloot 2006 af met een nettowinst van USD 7,2 miljard, 17% meer dan de USD 6,1 miljard uit 2005 en de sterkste stijging sinds het bedrijf in 1997 de winst met 43% wist te vergroten. Zonder bijzondere lasten voor de overname van Chiron zou de nettowinst met 25% zijn gestegen in 2006.

De omzet van Novartis nam toe met 15% in 2006 tot USD 37,0 miljard. Gemeten in lokale valuta nam de omzet 14% toe. De operationele marge nam toe van 21,4% tot 22,1%. De hoogste omzetgroei werd in 2006 behaald door de divisie Sandoz, die zich bezighoudt met de verkoop van generieke medicijnen.

De farmaceutische divisie zag de omzet 11% toenemen, het zesde achtereenvolgende jaar van een tweecijferige omzetgroei. Ook nam het marktaandeel toe. De omzet van het middel Diovan, dat gebruikt wordt tegen hoge bloedruk, steeg met 15% in lokale valuta tot meer dan USD 4 miljard. De omzet van het leukemie-medicijn Gleevec nam toe met 17% in lokale valuta tot USD 2,5 miljard.

Komend jaar lanceert Novartis onder meer de middelen Exforge (hoge bloeddruk), Tekturna (hoge bloeddruk), Galvus (diabetes) en Lucentis (blindheid). Het concern zegt agressief te blijven investeren in onderzoek en ontwikkeling om in de komende jaren meer nieuwe middelen te introduceren. Voor 2007 voorziet Novartis een omzetgroei met een midden tot hoog enkelcijferig percentage.

Het dividend over 2006 wordt met 17% verhoogd naar CHF 1,35 per aandeel tegen CHF 1,15 een jaar eerder. Het is de tiende verhoging van het dividend sinds Novartis in 1996 ontstond uit de fusie van Ciba-Geigy en Sandoz.

Industry observers are expecting a minimum of three consortia of private equity companies to submit bids this week to buy Akzo Nobel of the Netherland's pharmaceutical arm Organon.

Both Bloomberg and Reuters, which limited themselves to citing "sources familiar with the situation," said that one group, including Carlyle and Cinven, is currently evaluating an offer, as is a buyout group including Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co, Warburg Pincus and CVC Capital Partners. Another consortium, consisting of Blackstone, Bain Capital, Alpinvest, Apax and Texas Pacific Group, is also reported to be planning a move. The Blackstone and KKR groups were named by Dutch newspaper Het Financieele Dagblad last week.

The equity firms themselves are saying nothing about any planned bid, while Akzo keeps insisting that it prefers to go down the initial public offering road for Organon. However, the IPO plans were disturbed somewhat by Pfizer's decision to discontinue its role in the development of asenapine, a new schizophrenia drug which was seen as a vital part of any flotation.

An outright sale of the unit is estimated to be worth at least $10 billion, more than Akzo would probably get on the public markets. Such a sum would be particularly useful if, as has been rumoured, Akzo makes a move to acquire UK chemical giant ICI, which is valued at around $11 billion.

LONDON, Jan 16 (Reuters) - Dutch chemical group Akzo Nobel (AKZO.AS: Quote, Profile , Research) has received at least four private equity bids for its Organon BioSciences drugs business in advance of a board meeting on Tuesday, sources familiar with the matter said.
The company, which may also float the unit, had set Monday as the deadline for offers for Organon, which is expected to fetch around $10 billion if it is sold, and will discuss its next step at Tuesday's meeting, the sources said.
A group including Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. [KKR.UL], Warburg Pincus and CVC Capital Partners [CVC.UL] submitted an offer, as did one made up of Blackstone [BG.UL], Bain Capital, Alpinvest, Apax [APAX.UL] and Texas Pacific Group [TPG.UL], the sources said.
UK-based buyout firm Cinven has teamed up with U.S. private equity giant Carlyle and London-based BC Partners for the third offer, they said.

RTRS-Meer winst Merck door goede verkoop lcd-kristallen
DARMSTADT (ANP) - Het Duitse concern Merck, dat het
Zwitserse biotechnologiebedrijf Serono koopt voor 10,6 miljard
euro, heeft in het vierde kwartaal een nettowinst geboekt van
129,5 miljoen euro tegen 109,5 miljoen euro een jaar eerder. De
omzet steeg met 9 procent tot 1,63 miljard euro. Dat maakte het
farmacie- en chemieconcern donderdag bekend.

Merck is 's werelds grootste producent van vloeibare
kristallen die worden gebruikt in lcd-schermen van platte
televisies en mobiele telefoons. De verkoop daarvan steeg met 20
procent in het afgelopen kwartaal. De bedrijfswinst bedroeg
303,3 miljoen euro. Het resultaat is beter dan analisten hadden
verwacht. Zij gingen gemiddeld uit van een bedrijfswinst van 264
miljoen euro.

Bij de farmaciedivisie steeg de omzet in het afgelopen
kwartaal met 8,6 procent tot 1,07 miljard euro. Het
belangrijkste medicijn van Merck is de kankerbestrijder Erbitux.
Mecrk liet eerder deze maand weten dat het mogelijk zijn divisie
voor generieke medicijnen afstoot om de schuld te reduceren.

On January 9, 2007 the company initiated a phase I/II trial with Neuprex on allogenic stem cell transplant patients. Xoma remains committed to bringing Neuprex to the market in the U.S. through a combination of in-house and investigator sponsored trials (ISTs). Safety and pharmacokinestic data collected from this phase I/II trial in HSCT should help management plan additional trials potentially in the radiation protection under the U.S. government's biodefense efforts.

On January 10, 2007, Genentech (NYSE: DNA) reported sales of both Raptiva and Lucentis above expectations. Genentech pays a royalty to Xoma on sales of both drugs. We have revised our earnings model based on the stronger-than-expected sales of Raptiva and Lucentis.

Most recently, on January 17, 2007, Xoma signed a second collaboration with development partner Schering-Plough (NYSE: SGP), resulting in an upfront milestone payment. Xoma has not disclosed the upfront milestone fees captured from this collaboration, just that the total deal before back-end royalties on product sales is between $25 and $75 million. Using its extensive collection of phage display libraries and optimization technologies, Xoma will discover therapeutic antibodies against one or more targets selected by Schering-Plough. Xoma may also utilize its proprietary Human Engineering technology to humanize antibody candidates generated by hybridoma techniques. During the fourth quarter of 2006, both parties continued with pre-clinical studies. We expect an announcement of the first target to be made soon.

Slow LabCorp Ramp-Up

The UNH contract could produce volatility for LabCorp (NYSE: LH), given the possible slower-than-expected ramp-up. Stock buybacks remain a focal point for cash use and our estimates go up on an increased buyback outlook. At 18x our increased 2007 $3.91 EPS estimate, a premium to Quest Diagnostics' (NYSE: DGX) 1.3x 2007 P/E/G, our target moves to $70.00.

With the integration of Dynacare and Dianon complete, the company now expects to benefit through cost savings. LabCorp expects these acquisitions to result in a cost savings of about $30 million on a pre-tax basis by mid 2007. The company outlined (as part of a strategic plan) to restructure LH sites over the next two years based on the Dianon model. Management believes that Dianon, a leader in anatomical pathology testing, is more efficiently run and provides better customer service.

RTRS-General Electric breidt medische divisie uit
NEW YORK (ANP) - Het Amerikaanse conglomeraat General
Electric breidt zijn medische divisie uit. Het concern krijgt er
twee activiteiten bij die zich met name bezighouden met
laboratoriumonderzoek. Deze worden voor 8,13 miljard dollar
overgenomen van het medische bedrijf Abbott, zo maakten beide
ondernemingen donderdag bekend.

Op de financiële markten deden de afgelopen dagen al
geruchten de ronde over de transactie. In de aanloop naar het
nieuws ging het aandeel Abbott flink omhoog. Abbott houdt zich
ook bezig met de ontwikkeling van medecijnen en nieuwe
technologieën in de gezondheidszorg. De gezondheidszorgdivisie

WHO: mazelenbestrijding zeer succesvol
Het gaat goed met de bestrijding van mazelen in de wereld.

Doelstelling
Dat meldt de Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie (WHO). Tussen 1999 en 2005 daalde het aantal mensen dat aan de besmettelijke ziekte overleed met 60%. Het doel van de WHO om in die periode het aantal slachtoffers te halveren, is dus ruimschoots gehaald. De sterke daling is te danken aan een grootschalige vaccinatiecampagne.

Inentingen
Tussen 2000-2005 zijn maar liefst 362 miljoen kinderen ingeënt. In het begin van de jaren '60 overleden jaarlijks nog 6 miljoen mensen aan de mazelen.

$3 million pledge to energize biotech fund, governor says

Some of the biggest local names in private and corporate giving put their stamp on Washington's nascent effort to bolster the biotech and global health industries by funding research.
Amgen, Microsoft, Regence BlueShield, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation are making a $3 million contribution to the state's Life Sciences Discovery Fund, Gov. Christine Gregoire said Thursday.
She called it "a jump start" for the fund, which is scheduled to begin handing out $350 million in bonus tobacco-settlement money to scientists at the state's universities, hospitals, stand-alone research centers and health departments in 2008.
The Life Sciences Discovery Fund, created by Gregoire and the Legislature in 2005, is aimed at funding research that will improve health, lead to new jobs and spur other forms of economic growth for the state.
The $3 million pledged Thursday will back a grant focused on using technology to improve health-care quality and efficiency, said Lee Huntsman, the executive director of the Life Sciences Discovery Fund Authority and former University of Washington president.
While the size of the initial donation is more-drop-in-the-bucket than jaw-dropping — Washington institutions bring in between $1 billion and $2 billion in research funding annually — Huntsman said the high-profile donors bring intangible benefits.
"They are donors who are providing both financial support and a kind of advocacy and encouragement that really makes a difference," he said.
Gregoire invoking the state's global giants in aerospace, software and coffee, said, "We will be at the forefront again, and this time it will be in global health."
She spoke in an unused laboratory on the eighth floor of the 9th and Stewart Life Sciences Building. It was once the home of biotech company Corixa, one of several local biotechs to be enveloped by a larger company in recent years. Sometimes, as with Corixa, jobs disappear along with the local companies. (The acquisition of Icos by Eli Lilly, if shareholders approve it next week, will mean several hundred more jobs lost.)
Children's Hospital & Regional Medical Center purchased the 9th and Stewart Building in October, and the empty work benches behind Gregoire will soon be used by vaccine and immunization researchers, a Children's spokeswoman said.

The authority is drumming up additional private donations, said Huntsman: "We have hopes of actually making that $3 million into $6 [million]."
The state money differs from grants that researchers receive from the National Institutes of Health and other federal sources in its specific focus on research that could generate economic returns for the state.
"It's not going to be used as a substitute for federal funds," said Ken Spitzer, associate vice provost for research at Washington State University.
He expects the state fund, for example, to help turn promising research into an early-stage company that could attract venture capital, or purchasing a new piece of equipment that could leverage additional federal funding.
"That in itself is an enterprise," Spitzer said.
He added that this approach is still untested in Washington state, but that other states have long-standing efforts to bolster their life-sciences industries.
In fact, according to Gregoire's Web site, despite being a top destination for federal dollars, Washington ranks 49th in state financial support for research, "and most of that is focused on agriculture."

Chemical weapons vaccine enters clinical trials

19/01/2007 - A vaccine that protects against the effects of nerve agents often used in chemical weapons is ready to be tested on human volunteers, according to developer Baxter Healthcare.

The ‘BioScavenger' vaccine could prevent and possibly treat the effects of exposure to organophosphorus nerve agents such as Sarin, Soman and VX. The Phase I clinical trial will be managed by the DynPort Vaccine Company (DVC), part of information technology service provider Computer Sciences.
“Confirming the safety of this product in humans is a crucial step toward an FDA-licensed chemical nerve agent prophylactic,” said Dr Robert House, chief scientific officer of DVC.

BEST BIOTECH BETS
DEMS' CONTROL IS GOOD NEWS FOR SECTOR

January 21, 2007 -- Lindsay Lohan and biotech companies have something in common these days: They both like drugs.
Unfortunately for Lindsay, rehab was her fate. But for the biotech investor, there's a big, healthy upside.
Fueled by a desire by Democrats, now in control of Congress, to push stem-cell research, biotech stocks are set up to have a pretty good year. These companies are trying to discover the cure for diseases that affect millions of people - such as Alzheimer's, cancer and AIDS.
So if a company can find a cure, it's a home run.
On the expectation that additional federal monies could be coming their way, several biotech companies - and the funds that invest in them - are heading north.
In the first few weeks of 2007, the ABN AMBRO Biotech Fund is up 6.8 percent, the Biotechnology SPDR is up 5.9 percent, and Amgen, a biotech company, is ahead 8 percent.
But reward always comes with risk. These companies and funds could sink if the research doesn't turn up successful drugs.
But don't be scared off. The sector has been very promising lately because products that work are finally coming to market, notes Brad Sorensen, director of sector analysis at Schwab's Center for Investment Research. So because of that potential upside, biotech could still have a small place even in a risk-averse portfolio.
First, what is a biotechnology company? Unfortunately, "biotech" has become a catch-all for any risky medical/drug company. But there's a difference between a biotech company, like Amgen, and a pharmaceutical company, like Pfizer.
Biotechnology is any technology based on biology and uses proteins and antibodies to create drugs that generally need to be injected. A typical pharmaceutical company is more chemistry-based, dealing more with small molecules. Most pharmaceutical drugs come in a pill.
If you're looking for individual stocks, consider the solid, undervalued ones, such as Amgen (AMGN) and MedImmune (MEDI: up 6 percent in 2007), suggests Karen Andersen a biotech equity analyst at Morningstar.
Safer than betting on a single stock is buying shares of exchange-traded funds, like the Merrill Lynch Biotech HOLDRS (BBH), up 6.6 percent this year. There are 18 companies in the HOLDRS, including industry leaders like Genentech, Amgen and Gilead Sciences. The SPDR Biotechnology ETF (XBI) follows the S&P Biotechnology Select Industry index and could also be a great choice.
Or go with a mutual fund. The ProFunds Biotechnology UltraSector ProFund has been a winner over the last few weeks. The fund is designed to return 150 percent of the movement of the Dow Jones U.S. Biotechnology Index.
So invest wisely. Lindsay Lohan made a mess of herself. Don't do the same.

'Quiet revolution' may herald new RNA therapeutics

Scientists at the University of Oxford have identified a surprising way of switching off a gene involved in cell division. The mechanism involves a form of RNA, a chemical found in cell nuclei, whose role was previously unknown, and could have implications for preventing the growth of tumour cells.
RNA plays an important and direct role in the synthesis of proteins, the building blocks of our bodies. However, scientists have known for some time that not all types of RNA are directly involved in protein synthesis. Now, in research funded by the Wellcome Trust and the Medical Research Council, a team of scientists has shown that one particular type of RNA plays a key role in regulating the gene implicated in control of tumour growth. The research is published online today in Nature.
The Human Genome Project identified about 34,000 genes responsible for producing proteins. The remaining part – in fact, most of the genome – constituted what was considered to be "junk" DNA with no function. However, latest estimates show that this "junk" DNA produces around half a million varieties of RNA of unknown functions.
"There's been a quiet revolution taking place in biology during the past few years over the role of RNA," says Dr Alexandre Akoulitchev, a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Oxford. "Scientists have begun to see 'junk' DNA as having a very important function. The variety of RNA types produced from this "junk" is staggering and the functional implications are huge."
The particular form of RNA that has been of interest to Dr Akoulitchev's team is involved in regulation of the dihydrofolate reductase gene (DHFR), determining whether the gene is "on" or "off". The DHFR gene produces an enzyme that controls thymine production, necessary in rapidly dividing cells.
"Inhibiting the DHFR gene could help prevent the growth of neoplastic cancerous cells, ordinary cells which develop into tumour cells, such as in prostate cancer cells," explains Dr Akoulitchev. "In fact, the first anti-cancer drug, Methotrexate, acts by binding and inhibiting the enzyme produced by this gene."
Dr Akoulitchev believes that understanding how we can use the RNA to switch off or inhibit DHFR and other genes may have important therapeutic implications for developing new anti-cancer treatments.

UTRECHT/WAGENINGEN - 19-01-2007 - Wetenschappers verwachten dat in de nabije toekomst vleesvervangers gemaakt van insectencellen op de markt zullen komen. Insectenvlees heeft namelijk een hoge voedingswaarde, maar het eten van de beestjes in hun natuurlijke staat schrikt Westerse mensen af.

Dat voorspelt voedingstechnoloog Marjoleine Verkerk, die aan de Wageningen Universiteit promoveert op een onderzoek naar de toepassing van insectencellen. Verkerk experimenteert vooral met de larve van de zijderups. Bedrijven gebruiken insectencellen al voor de productie van industrieel eiwit.
