Stocks dropped on Tuesday as investors worried that rising oil prices could choke off the economic recovery, with equities looking to keep taking their lead from oil prices in the near term.

U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said the recent surge in oil prices was unlikely to derail the economy, but his comments did little to reassure investors worried that turmoil in the Middle East could hit Saudi Arabia, the world's largest oil exporter.

"All eyes continue to be on turmoil in the Middle East," said Michael Sheldon, chief market strategist at RDM Financial in Westport, Connecticut. "The million-dollar question remains what happens to Saudi Arabia."

de hele wereldeconomie is aan het derailleren en wat zegt die warhoofd van 1 benno, dat de economie niet derailleerd. het enige wat de economie weer op de rit kan krijgen is 1 billijke olieprijs, maar om 1 of andere reden hebben de beleidsmakers daar geen notie van.

Saudi Arabia’s stock market continued to fall on Wednesday, taking its main index to a 23-month low and extending its decline into thirteen consecutive sessions as plans for political protests in the kingdom worried investors.

The Saudi Tadawul All-Share Index lost a further 5.1 per cent to 5,256.14, taking if to levels last seen in April 2009. Losses were widespread throughout the region, with the Dubai DFM General down 3.5 per cent to 1,374.43 and the Qatar QSI off 3.6 per cent to 7,657.5.

lijkt china wel, daar weet ook niemand hoe het inflatiecijfer wordt berekend, dat zijn ook grootkunstenaars in het apen met de nummers.

If oil hits record levels in 2011, it is going to be a massive shock to the U.S. economic system. Any hopes for an "economic recovery" will be completely dashed.

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — The sudden surge in oil prices in response to turmoil in Northern Africa and the Middle East has shocked the stock market out of its winter carnival, but a new, oil-led bear market is not on the horizon.

After three straight months of gains, the market was looking for an excuse to rest, and a jump in oil above $100 a barrel and then $102 a barrel on Wednesday seemed just the thing to rattle some nerves. Gold’s recent move to all-time highs didn’t help.
