In Korea waren beide partijen oorlogsmoe.

Rusland is toch begonnen?

Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelenskyy says Russia hit by 'extraordinarily significant' losses in east

Ukraine's military has inflicted "extraordinarily significant" losses on Russian forces near the town of Vuhledar in the eastern Donbas region, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says.

"The situation is very complicated. And we are fighting. We are breaking down the invaders and inflicting extraordinarily significant losses on Russia," Mr Zelenskyy said in his nightly video address.

Mr Zelenskyy referred to several towns in Donbas — where fighting has been focused for months — saying "the more losses Russia suffers there, in Donbas, in Bakhmut, Vuhledar, Marinka, Kreminna, the faster we will be able to end this war with Ukraine's victory".

The Ukrainian president outlined the state of defence in other sectors after what he described as an "extended" meeting of the military command.

Matters were under control near the Black Sea port of Odesa, he said, and troops were "protecting" the central region of Zaporizhzhia, partly controlled by Russian forces.

There were "very good results" on the northern border with Russia and its ally Belarus, areas where Ukrainian troops retook cities from Russian forces in September and October.

"Of course, military issues and intelligence details are not something you can share with everyone," Mr Zelenskyy said.

"But I want our people to have predictability right now — and a sense that Ukraine is moving towards its goals."

General Hodges: Ukraine may liberate Crimea before end of summer

The ex-commander of US troops in Europe, General Ben Hodges, believes that if there are long-range missiles, Ukraine can liberate Crimea before the end of the summer, and Donbas next year or even earlier.

Source: Hodges in the comments to Ukrinform

Quote: "We are going to do everything possible to make Ukraine win this year."

"It is quite possible, at least, that Ukraine will liberate Crimea before the end of summer."

Details: At the same time, Hodges noted that the liberation of Crimea in such a time frame is only possible if the partners provide the necessary weapons, primarily high-precision weapons of long range. The Armed Forces of Ukraine should be able to shoot at 150–300 kilometres, and for the missile to fall exactly on target, then the Russian Black Sea Fleet will simply have to leave the peninsula, the general said.

Hodges called Crimea a "crucial place", while Donbas is simply "important". He stressed that Ukraine will not be safe if Russia holds the peninsula. He explained that if the Russians are in Crimea, Ukraine will not be able to use the port of Mariupol. And even in Odesa, 140 vessels are waiting for the opportunity to leave the port but cannot.

"We must help Ukraine return Crimea. This year. We want this to happen, and we must give everything necessary," Hodges said.

According to him, what will change the rules of the game will not be any specific weapons, be it tanks or planes, but the decision of partners that Ukraine should win. As for the tanks, he noted that Ukraine has its own, those that it captured from the Russian army, and later Western ones. The Armed Forces of Ukraine use all this very well, and tanks will help isolate Crimea.

Hodges also expressed the opinion that by keeping Russian forces around Bakhmut, the Ukrainian Armed Forces can isolate Crimea.

Japan to give Ukraine $5.5B, host online G-7 plus Zelenskyy

apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-zel...

OKYO (AP) — Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Monday announced a new $5.5 billion financial aid for Ukraine and will mark the first anniversary of the war by hosting an online Group of Seven summit with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Kishida, speaking at a global forum in Tokyo organized by a Japanese think tank, said Ukraine still suffers under the Russian invasion and its people need help to rebuild their daily lives and infrastructure that’s been badly damaged by Russian attacks.

As this year’s president of G-7, Kishida said he will host an online summit to be joined by Zelenskyy on Friday to mark the first anniversary of the Russian invasion. It will be the first time for Kishida to host a G-7 summit.

Japan has joined the United States and European nations in sanctioning Russia over its invasion and providing humanitarian and economic support for Ukraine. Japan was quick to react because it fears a possible impact of the war in East Asia, where China’s military has grown increasingly assertive and has escalated tensions around self-ruled Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its territory.

In his speech, Kishida acknowledged he made a decisive move because of “strong concern that Ukraine may be tomorrow’s East Asia.”
He said Russia’s invasion is a challenge for the entire rules-based international order that brings an end to the post-Cold War era. “That’s why I decided to resolutely respond to (Russia) with sanctions.”

Japan has provided loans of more than 70 billion yen ($520 million) to Ukraine in emergency economic assistance. The country has also accepted more than 2,000 displaced Ukrainians and helped them with housing assistance, support for jobs and education.

Long-range artillery ammo deals for Ukraine gain EU traction

European Union members may agree to pool ammunition purchases as early as next month in a push to secure badly needed firepower for Ukraine.

A proposal circulated by Estonia this week to invest around €4 billion ($4.3 billion) to jointly procure a million rounds of ammunition won tentative support from the Netherlands and Romania. EU foreign ministers are expected to discuss the plan when they meet in Brussels on Monday and a final decision could come when the bloc’s leaders meet in March.

“As a thought, it’s very good because ammunition is an issue — Ukraine needs a large amount and we also need to get our stockpiles up, Dutch Defense Minister Kajsa Ollongren said in an interview on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference. “Right now we’re doing it on a national basis, and to do that on a larger scale is something that I would also support and promote.

Dwindling ammunition supplies are a big concern, with Ukrainian and Russian forces burning through tens of thousands of artillery shells each day. And while Ukraine is firing ammunition at a more efficient rate, it’s still using up shells faster than Europe can produce them, officials say.

US and European governments have sought to boost production as a result, both to supply Ukraine and to replenish their own stocks. EU foreign ministers are expected to discuss the Estonian plan when they meet in Brussels on Monday, though a decision is not expected until the bloc’s leaders meet in March.

In the Kursk region, Russia this morning, conscript soldiers accidentally set off an explosion.
Allegedly, six soldiers were killed.

The servicemen, located in the dugout, stoked the stove ( kachel ) and imprudently poured gasoline into it.
