Uber Sees the Cartography on the Wall

With an eye on its future, Uber last week announced it was increasing its investment in mapping.

"The ongoing need for maps tailored to the Uber experience is why we're doubling down on our investment in mapping," said Brian McClendon, Uber's vice president of advanced technologies and former vice president of Google Maps.

McClendon didn't reveal how much Uber will invest in its mapping initiative, but news reports have pegged the figure at US$500 million.

"We are declining to comment on the $500 million number," Uber spokesperson Molly Spaeth told TechNewsWorld.

Uber began putting mapping cars on the road last year, and this summer it expanded the program to Mexico.

"Existing maps are a good starting point, but some information isn't that relevant to Uber, like ocean topography. There are other things we need to know a lot more about, like traffic patterns and precise pickup and dropoff locations," noted McClendon.

"Moreover, we need to be able to provide a seamless experience in parts of the world where there aren't detailed maps -- or street signs," he pointed out.

Google’s push to perfect self-driving cars sparked the current race among automakers and tech companies to commercialize the technology for passenger vehicles. For two former Google engineers, the projected timetable for introducing truly autonomous cars, sometime around 2020, is too far off. Instead, Lior Ron, former Product Lead for Google Maps, and Anthony Levandowski, who was Technical Lead for Google’s self-driving car division, see long-haul commercial trucks as a faster entry point to an era of robotic vehicles. In January they launched Otto, a self-funded startup operating out of a 50,000-square-foot San Francisco warehouse.

Zegt niet veel, zo'n shuttle in een beperkte en goed gecontroleerde omgeving. Beetje flauw van Hik om dit aan te dragen als voorbeeld dat het zonder HD maps kan.
Geheel zonder kaarten kunnen ze het daar in India ook niet:

Als je redundancy en efficiency niet belangrijk vindt, kan je ook met TT's RoadDNA of MBLY's REM-techniek rijden zonder GPS.

Waarom worden start-ups of ideeën altijd als een grote bedreiging voor een bestaande (bewezen en zich steeds verbeterende) techniek gezien. Ze worden niet alleen gezien als een gevaar, maar gepresenteerd als het naderende einde van Tom2.
Ik geloof in een basiskaart als een must. Je kan met camera's en sensoren bijna alles opmerken. Toch wil je ook graag weten wat er na of achter bv. die muur ligt. Daar komen de potentiële gevaren vandaan. Een zelfrijdende, zelflerende, auto zal om zelf te kunnen leren toch eerst echt moeten weten waar hij rijd en waarop / waar heen. Dat leer je niet proefondervindelijk, die basiskennis moet er zijn. Het inleren van zaken die niet in de basis staan, daar geloof ik in. Ook dat zal lastig zijn, maar dat is wel noodzakelijk.

Echt 'zelfrijden' overal is volgens mij jaren ver weg. Niet zozeer om technische redenen (SDC is waarschijnlijk veiliger dan de mens) maar vanwege acceptatie en wetgeving. En insurance, niet te vergeten.
Het zal stap voor stap gaan. Qua functionele stappen, niet qua de geografische stappen die @Juun in de maanddraad veronderstelde. (Verder niks tegen @juun hoor.)

Ook allen een prettige zondag nog. Mijn zeer oude moeder is stervende, het duurt niet lang meer. Aan haar en haar alleen heb ik mijn studie te danken.
Zij en wij hebben er vrede mee. Zij verlangt naar rust, en ik geloof met haar dat zij die eeuwige vrede zal vinden. Intussen ontspan ik mij af en toe op dit forum. Vertrouwd gebied, waar ik makkelijk van me af schrijf... Sta het me toe, svp.
